The value of early postoperative feeding with an elemental diet was assessed in 30 patients after major gastrointestinal operations. were allocated at random to conventional treatment (control group) or the (ED group). clinical and metabolic course 15 ED group significantly better than that controls. Patients lost less weight had a shorter stay hospital. Negative nitrogen balance more pronounced control throughout seven days. Energy intake higher group. Provided is used caution, it may be...

Twenty two patients were entered into a randomised controlled clinical trial comparing the efficacy of somatostatin and vasopressin in controlling acute variceal haemorrhage. Somatostatin was significantly more successful haemorrhage than (p = 0.003). Furthermore, no complications observed during treatment with somatostatin.
The traditional management of acute cholecystitis is initial conservative treatment with antibiotics followed by elective cholecystectomy. Although early cholecystectomy has often been advocated, there only one randomized controlled clinical trial comparing the two methods treatment. This paper reports preliminary results such a in which 32 patients have studied so far. Of 17 managed conservatively, was misdiagnosis 2 (11-8 per cent). In remaining 15 3 (20 cent) required urgent operation...
Summary The transit time of a mercury loaded capsule in the small intestine was estimated 22 pregnant subjects. results obtained were compared with 8 non‐pregnant controls. pregnancy significantly increased.

The net transport and unidirectional fluxes of water, sodium, potassium were studied in four subjects with diffuse untreated proctocolitis, by perfusing the colon isotopically-labelled solution instilled through a tube introduced mouth. results compared to those obtained 13 healthy subjects. In proctocolitis colonic absorption sodium water was impaired secretion increased. movement electrolytes across mucosa into lumen increased opposite direction reduced. close correlation between...

Few studies have compared vasoactive drugs with endoscopic sclerotherapy in the control of acute variceal haemorrhage. Octreotide is widely used for this purpose, but its value remains undetermined. To compare octreotide haemorrhage.Consecutive patients haemorrhage.Patients were randomised at endoscopy to receive either a 48 hour intravenous infusion 50 pg/h (n = 73), or emergency 77).Overall bleeding and mortality was not significantly different between (85%, 62 patients) (82%, 63 over trial...
Abstract The effects of somatostatin (SRIF) and its long-acting analogue, SMS 201-995 on the prevention treatment acute pancreatitis were studied in rats. Acute was established by ligating bile duct at point entry into duodenum, thereby allowing reflux pancreas. Administration SRIF (4 μg kg−1 body wt IV followed a 12 h infusion 4 h−1) or (2 μgkg−1 SC) time ligation prevented increase serum concentrations amylase lipase observed control rats after ligation. Moreover, administration...
Abstract The effects of a somatostatin analogue, SMS 201-995, on hepatic haemodynamics in the pig and intravariceal pressure man were studied. An infusion 250 μg/h 201-995 significantly reduced portal pressure, venous flow artery pig. These changes accompanied by reduction cardiac output, reflex slowing heart an increase arterial blood pressure. Splanchnic vascular resistance was increased following administration but remained unchanged. Administration 50 μg from 27.4 ± 2.5 to 15.8 2.1 mmHg...
The pattern and rate of gastric emptying have been studied in 16 patients before after vagotomy pyloroplasty. emptying, expressed as half life minutes, was not greatly changed by operation. After operation, however, there a rapid initial phase particularly marked who had post-vagotomy diarrhoea.
Gastric emptying was estimated in 16 patients with atrophic gastritis, 10 gastric cancer, and 11 without gastro-duodenal disease by measuring the disappearance from stomach of a standard meal containing radioactive chromium. Delay found gastritis marked stasis carcinoma stomach. The role delay aetiology cancer is discussed.

The effect of increased portal pressure on the ileal sorption sodium and water was determined in acute studies anesthetized dogs. Portal controlled by an inflatable cuff placed around vein movement into out a segment ileum use Na 22 D 2 O. With place but not inflated, exsorption (movement from blood to intestine) increased, insorption intestine blood) decreased, little affected. Further increases produced progressive increase rate without having further significant effects or water.
Very little is known about the normal temporal and quantitative relationships between gastric emptying gall bladder emptying.
