Objective: Phantom limb pain is prevalent in patients post-amputation and difficult to treat. We assessed the efficacy of mirror therapy relieving phantom unilateral, upper extremity male amputees. Methods: Fifteen participants from Walter Reed Brooke Army Medical Centers were randomly assigned one two groups: (n=9) or control (n=6, covered mental visualization therapy). Participants asked perform 15 minutes their daily for 5 days/week four weeks. The primary outcome was as measured using a...
Abstract The extreme conditions causing fatigue in military service members combat and training deserve special consideration. collective effects of severe exertion, limited caloric intake, sleep deprivation, combined with the inherent stressors combat, lead to both physiological psychological that may significantly impair performance. Studies have revealed a myriad endocrine, cognitive, neurological changes occur as result exposure conditions. Further contributory multiple deployments,...
Background. Machine perfusion (MP) for liver transplantation has become more widespread in the United States, but national studies on this growing practice are lacking. We investigated use and outcomes of MP transplantation. Methods. Adult (≥18 y) recipients transplanted between January 1, 2016 September 30, 2023 Network Organ Sharing database were included. used Cox regression to compare 1-y posttransplant recipient survival all-cause graft failure by performed subgroup analyses among...
Mirror therapy has been demonstrated to reduce phantom limb pain (PLP) experienced by unilateral amputees. Research suggests that the visual feedback of observing a moving in mirror is critical for therapeutic efficacy.Since not an option bilateral lower amputees, purpose this study was determine if direct observation another person's limbs could be used relieve PLP.We randomly assigned 20 amputees with PLP (n = 11) or mental visualization 9) treatment. Treatment consisted seven discrete...
Abstract Whole-genome sequencing, particularly in fungi, has progressed at a tremendous rate. More difficult, however, is experimental testing of the inferences about gene function that can be drawn from comparative sequence analysis alone. We present genome-wide functional characterization sequenced but experimentally understudied budding yeast, Saccharomyces bayanus var. uvarum (henceforth referred to as S. bayanus), allowing us map changes over 20 million years separate this organism...
Summary Background: The rapidly growing industry for mobile medical applications provides numerous smartphone resources designed healthcare professionals. However, not all are equally useful in addressing the questions of early trainees. Methods: Three popular, free, were evaluated along with a GoogleTM web search on both AppleTM and AndroidTM devices. Six students at large academic hospital each application one-week period while various clinical rotations. Results: was most frequently used...
Phantom limb pain (PLP) following amputation, which is experienced by the vast majority of amputees, has been reported to be relieved with daily sessions mirror therapy. During each session, a used view reflected image intact moving, providing visual feedback consistent movement missing/phantom limb. To investigate potential neural correlates treatment effect, we measured brain responses in volunteers unilateral leg amputation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during...
Phantom limb phenomena are well characterized, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we report a patient who relieves his phantom sensations and pain, experienced as itching cramping, through scratching or massaging prosthesis leg of another person. This pain relief occurs only when present. We hypothesize that symptom results from incorporation foreign into patient's body image, mediated by sensory mirror neuron system, relieving restoring concordance between systems.
Delayed graft function (DGF) is associated with inferior posttransplant outcomes in kidney transplantation. Given these adverse outcomes, we sought to determine the incidence, unique risk factors, and for simultaneous liver (SLK) transplant recipients developing DGF.We studied 6214 adult SLK from March 2002 February 2017 using Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. We determined associations between factors DGF Poisson multivariate regression failure mortality Cox proportional hazard...
Pre-rounding is essential to preparing for morning rounds. Despite its importance, pre-rounding rarely formally taught within the medical school curriculum and more often informally learned by modeling residents. The evolution of mobile applications provides opportunities optimize this process. To evaluate three options available students while promote adoption resources in clinical care.Six formed evaluation cohort. Students were surveyed assess practices. Participants utilized paper-based...

The Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2009 program conducted by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has resulted in a Virtual Integration Environment (VIE) that provides common development platform for researchers and clinicians design, model build prosthetic limbs then integrate test them with patients. One clinical need arose during VIE was feature to easily create animations represent patient activities of daily living (ADLs) simultaneously capture real-time surface EMG...
Abstract Optimization of maintenance immunosuppression (mIS) regimens in the transplant recipient requires a balance between sufficient potency to prevent rejection and avoidance excessive toxicities complications. The optimal regimen after simultaneous liver‐kidney (SLK) transplantation remains unclear, but small single‐center reports have shown success with steroid‐sparing regimens. We studied 4184 adult SLK recipients using Scientific Registry Transplant Recipients, from March 1, 2002,...
In Brief Heterotopic ossification (HO) often causes symptoms requiring surgical resection and may delay rehabilitation regimens for wounded service members. Clinical screening tools assessing HO have included serum alkaline phosphatase (AP), nuclear scintigraphic activity, patient pain scores. However, no studies to date investigated the relationship of these clinical predictors with incidence volume. Ten servicemen transfemoral amputations were in this retrospective study. Volumetric...
