Abstract As global SARS-CoV-2 burden and testing frequency have decreased, wastewater surveillance has emerged as a key tool to support clinical efforts. The aims of this study were identify characterize variants in samples collected from urban centers across South Africa. Here we show that sequencing analyses are temporally concordant with genomic reveal the presence multiple lineages not detected by surveillance. We genomics can epidemiological investigations reliably recovering prevalence...

Wastewater and environmental surveillance has been promoted as a communicable disease tool because it overcomes inherent biases in laboratory-based surveillance. Yet, little empirical evidence exists to support this notion, remains largely an intuitive, though highly plausible hypothesis. Our interdisciplinary study uses WES data show for underreporting of SARS-CoV-2 the context measurable statistically significant associations between economic conditions incidence testing rates. We obtained...

Abstract Background Recent studies showed promising results on application of iodine-containing nanomicelles, FS-1, against antibiotic resistant pathogens. The effect was studied Escherichia coli ATCC BAA-196. Materials & methods RNA sequencing for transcriptomics and the complete genome by SMRT PacBio RS II technology followed assembly methylomics study were performed. Results conclusions FS-1 treated E. an increased susceptibility to antibiotics ampicillin gentamicin. analysis...

Here, we report the complete genome sequence of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli strain ATCC BAA-196, a model organism used for studying possible antibiotic resistance reversion induced by FS-1, an iodine-containing complex. Two genomes, representing FS-1-treated and negative-control variants composed chromosome several plasmids, were assembled.

1.Iodine is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial disinfectant for topical application. Recent studies have shown promising results on the applicability of an iodine-containing complex, FS-1, against antibiotic-resistant pathogens. It was hypothesized that activity complexes may be modulated by organic moiety i.e., amino acids. 2.Gene regulation and metabolic alterations were studied in two model multidrug-resistant microorganisms, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC BAA-39, Escherichia coli BAA-196,...

Iodine is one of the oldest antimicrobial agents. Until now, there have been no reports on acquiring resistance to iodine. Recent studies showed promising results application iodine-containing nano-micelles, FS-1, against antibiotic-resistant pathogens as a supplement antibiotic therapy. The mechanisms action, however, remain unclear. aim this study was perform holistic analysis and comparison gene regulation in three phylogenetically distant multidrug-resistant reference strains...

Summary Background The World Health Organisation recommends wastewater based epidemiology (WBE) for SARS-CoV-2 as a complementary tool monitoring population-level epidemiological features of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, uptake WBE in low-to-middle income countries (LMIC) is low. We report on findings from surveillance network South Africa, and make recommendations regarding implementation LMICs Methods Seven laboratories using different test methodology, quantified influent collected 87...
