極く最近まで殆んど不明状態にあった我国のE型肝炎の実態を明らかにする目的で,我々は全国から総数254例のE型肝炎ウイルス(HEV)感染例を集め,統計学的・疫学的・ウイルス学的特徴を求めてこれを解析した.その結果,[i]HEV感染は北海道から沖縄まで全国津々浦々に浸透していること;[ii]感染者の多くは中高年(平均年齢約50歳)で,且つ男性優位(男女比約3.5対1)であること;[iii]我国に土着しているHEVはgenotype 3とgenotype 4であるが,後者は主に北海道に偏在していること;[iv]年齢と肝炎重症度との間に相関があること;[v]Genotype 3よりはgenotype 4による感染の方が顕性化率も重症化率も高いこと;[vi]発生時期が無季節性であること;[vii]集積症例全体の約30%は動物由来食感染,8%は輸入感染,2%は輸血を介する感染に帰せしめ得たものの,過半の症例(約60%)に於いては感染経路が不明のままであること;等の知見を得た.
