Total sleep deprivation in rodents and humans has been associated with hyperphagia. Over the past 40 years, self-reported duration United States decreased by almost 2 hours. To determine whether partial curtailment, an increasingly prevalent behavior, alters appetite regulation.Randomized, 2-period, 2-condition crossover clinical study.Clinical Research Center, University of Chicago, Illinois.12 healthy men (mean age [+/-SD], 22 +/- years; mean body mass index 23.6 2.0 kg/m2).Daytime profiles...

Sleep plays an important role in energy homeostasis. The present study tests the hypothesis that circulating levels of leptin, a hormone signals balance to brain, are influenced by sleep duration. We also analyzed associations between leptin and sympathovagal balance, cortisol, TSH, glucose, insulin under different bedtime conditions. Twenty-four-hour hormonal glucose profiles were sampled at frequent intervals, was estimated from heart rate variability 11 subjects studied after 6 d 4-h...

Insufficient sleep is associated with increased cardiometabolic risk. Alterations in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis may underlie this link. Our objective was to examine the impact of restricted on daytime profiles ACTH and cortisol concentrations.Thirteen subjects participated 2 laboratory sessions (2 nights 10 hours bed versus 4 bed) a randomized crossover design. Sleep polygraphically recorded. After second night each session, blood sampled at 20-minute intervals from 9:00 am midnight...

A bstract : This article discusses the hypothesis that adverse impact of low socioeconomic status (SES) on health may be partly mediated by decrements in sleep duration and quality. Low SES is frequently associated with a diminished opportunity to obtain sufficient or environmental conditions compromise In recent study, we examined carbohydrate metabolism, endocrine function, sympatho‐vagal balance young, healthy adults studied after restricting four hours per night for six nights as...

In normal men, the majority of GH secretion occurs in a single large postsleep onset pulse that is suppressed during total sleep deprivation. We examined impact semichronic partial loss, highly prevalent condition, on 24-h growth hormone profile. Eleven young men were studied after six nights restricted bedtimes (0100–0500) and 7 extended (2100–0900). Slow-wave (SWS) was estimated as duration stages III IV. activity (SWA) calculated electroencephalogram power density 0.5- to 3-Hz frequency...

Context:The acylation of ghrelin is essential for its stimulatory effects on GH release and appetite. Most the physiology has been defined based assay total (TG), which mainly reflects levels unacylated ghrelin. Whether acylated (AG) are influenced by circadian time sleep impact glucose regulation under physiologic conditions not known.

Summary Aims To evaluate the impact of obesity on clinical and sleep characteristics in a population narcoleptic children. Methods Data from children diagnosed with idiopathic narcolepsy National Reference Centers for Narcolepsy were collected between 2008 2011. Clinical electrophysiological compared obese (body mass index [ BMI ] greater than P97) nonobese Results The 117 (65 boys, 59 de novo patients) had mean age 11.6 ± 3.1 years diagnosis. Cataplexy was present 81%, DQB 1*0602 91%. Mean...

Objective To evaluate the relative contribution of sleep and endogenous circadian rhythmicity in producing 24-h variations plasma renin activity. Methods Ten normal young men were studied, under basal conditions with nocturnal from 2300–0700 h once after a night total deprivation followed by 8 daytime 0700 to 1500 h. Plasma activity was measured every 10 min for 24 profiles analysed using pulse detection program ULTRA. Results During night-time significant increase mean levels occurred...
