Background Data from the International Registry of Acute Aortic Dissection indicate that guideline criterion 5.5 cm for ascending aortic intervention misses many dissections occurring at smaller dimensions. Furthermore, studies natural behavior have generally treated root and aorta as 1 unit despite embryological, anatomical, functional differences. This study aims to disentangle histories aforementioned segments, allowing define specific criteria segments aorta. Methods Results Diameters...

Pericoronary adipose tissue (PCAT) is a source of microRNAs (miRs) that act as messengers for intercellular communication. We investigated whether the PCAT surrounding significant coronary atherosclerotic lesions shows specific miR expression patterns compared with plaque-free segments. included 49 patients 3-vessel artery disease (CAD) and 19 severe valvular but no CAD, who underwent elective cardiac surgery. The was harvested from two sites: adjacent to lesion miR-133a, miR-21, miR-26b,...

Ascending aortic aneurysms pose a different risk to each patient. We aim provide personalized stratification for such patients based on sex, age, body surface area and aneurysm location (root versus ascending).

Heart failure can be treated with devices that mechanically support the circulation. The improvement of these would benefit many patients, especially those refractory to maximal pharmacological treatment and ineligible for heart transplantation. This study examined whether shape memory alloy (SMA) fibers, which are fibers contract when electric current flows through them relax passively flow is interrupted, wrapped around failing assist in its pumping action. A band SMA was a silicon...

Pneumorachis, or intraspinal air, can be a rare result of blunt thoracic trauma. We report the case 40-year-old man with multiple injuries and pneumorachis associated persistent tachycardia. As factors that increase heart rate were gradually ruled out, air was considered potential culprit. Computed tomography revealed at level, which possibly promoted cardiac arrhythmogenesis. Air may transiently compress preganglionic sympathetic nerves output to heart.

The clinical importance of following up on the ascending aortic diameter lies in fundamental presumption that wall pathology eventually manifests as a change shape. However, describes vessel locally, and 55 mm criterion fails to prevent most dissections. We hypothesized geometric changes across aorta are not necessarily imprinted its diameter; i.e. maximum correlates weakly insignificantly with elongation, surface stretching, engorgement, tortuosity.

Pericoronary adipose tissue (PCAT) regulates arterial homeostasis, is considered to act in paracrine manner, and plays a role the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
