One hundred and twenty-six epidemiologically sequential, unrelated, carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from nine hospitals in six countries of South America were collected between July 2013 June 2014. We characterized 34 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated in Paraguay 2005. The belonged to two clones. major clone (sequence type 5 [ST5] or ST221, spa t149, staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec [SCCmec] I) was similar the Cordobes/Chilean spreading through South America, and minor (ST239 ST889, t037, SCCmec IIIA) related Brazilian clone.
