Doped and wired: The organization of the π functional units in amide-functionalized tetrathiafulvalene a gel by hydrogen-bonding interactions has given rise to nanofibers. Doping with iodine generates conducting material, which upon annealing gives nanowires metal-like conductivity (see current-sensing AFM image). Five interlocked rings in a linear arrangement form the familiar symbol of Olympic Games and also describe olympiadane, [5]catenane which was assembled from eight components two steps at ambient temperature pressure. This self-assembly process is possible as sufficient molecular recognition programmed into components. The fragmentation patterns mass spectrum 1H NMR support structure shown schematically on right.

The direct coupling of complex, functional organic molecules at a surface is one the outstanding challenges in road map to future molecular devices. Equally demanding meet this challenge without recourse additional functionalization building blocks and via clean reactions that leave no contamination. Here, we demonstrate directional unfunctionalized porphyrin molecules--large aromatic multifunctional blocks--on single crystal copper surface, which generates highly oriented one-dimensional...
