Blastocystis is a common intestinal protist in humans and animals worldwide. Wild domestic are thought to be reservoirs of subtypes that also infect humans. There limited studies on the prevalence subtype distribution horses. In this study, 185 fecal samples were collected from horses (1 month 17 years age) four regions Colombia (Sabana de Bogotá, Costa Atlántica, Llanos Orientales, Bogotá D.C.). presence determined by PCR next generation amplicon sequencing. Eighty-one (43.8%) positive for...
ABSTRACT Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune hematological condition characterized by a markedly isolated decrease in platelets without any apparent associated clinical conditions, resulting bleeding and bruising of the skin, mucous membranes, major organs. It often triggered preceding illness or several immune stimulants such as immunizations, infections, allergic reactions, among others. While uncommon, arthropod bites can trigger acute ITP. Four cases have been reported due to...
Enterocytozoon bieneusi was detected in dogs Bogota, Colombia for the first time. Of 120 dogs, 15% were positive by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Infected ranged from 2 to 14 years of age, and more male than female infected with E. (20% versus 5%). All PCR-positive specimens sequenced three genotypes identified. A dog-specific genotype (PtEbIX) identified feces 16 dogs. For two nucleotide sequences obtained genetically identical Peru 5 K previously reported as human pathogens. This is...
This is the first report of Enterocytozoon bieneusi in an equid species. Feces from 195 horses 4 locations Colombia were examined for E. by polymerase chain reaction. Of these, 21 (10.8%) found positive bieneusi. The prevalence <1 yr age was significantly higher (23.7%) than >1 (2.5%). No significant differences observed between male (13.7%) and female (9%). Sequencing internal transcribed spacer region SSUrRNA locus identified 3 genotypes. Two genotypes appear to be unique named Horse 1 2....
The aim of this work was to detect and identify Rickettsia species in ticks collected rural areas Villeta, Colombia. Tick specimens were from domestic animals walls houses five villages Villeta town humans Naranjal village (same town). Moreover, a flea the same area also processed. DNA extracted tested by conventional, semi-nested, nested PCR reactions targeting rickettsial genes. In village, nymph Amblyomma cajennense sensu lato amplified using primers for ompA sequenced (100% identity with...
Abstract Motivation Apicomplexan parasites, including Toxoplasma, Plasmodium and Babesia, are important pathogens that affect billions of humans animals worldwide. Usually a microscope is used to detect these but it difficult use microscopes clinician requires be trained. Finding cost-effective solution parasites particular interest in developing countries, which infection more common. Results Here, we propose an alternative method, deep cycle transfer learning (DCTL), apicomplexan by...
The genus Amblyomma is the third most diverse in number of species within Ixodidae, with practically half its distributed Americas, though there are also occurring Africa, Asia, and Australia. Within genus, several complexes veterinary public health importance. cajennense complex, represented by six a wide distribution, from Texas to northern Argentina. We combined two sequencing techniques generate complete mitogenomes belonging complex: genome skimming long-range PCRs methods. Thus, we...
Dogs can be infected by a wide range of Bartonella spp., but limited studies have been conducted in tropical urban and rural dog populations. We aimed to determine antibody prevalence 455 domestic dogs from four countries detect DNA subset these dogs. antibodies were detected 38 (8·3%) dogs, including 26 (10·1%) Colombia, nine (7·6%) Brazil, three (5·1%) Sri Lanka none Vietnam. extraction was performed for (63%) the 41 seropositive 10 seronegative Four PCR positive, two Colombian with B....
Etiology of acute undifferentiated febrile syndrome (AUFS) is often unknown, leading to inaccurate diagnosis and treatment. Villeta town has been identified as an endemic area for spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsioses but little known about possible amplifier hosts other Rickettsia species different from rickettsii. Besides, few studies have approached AUFS etiologies in the region. We investigated role dengue, leptospirosis, rickettsioses, human anaplasmosis, Q causes patients Villeta....
We evaluated extracts taken from S. magellanica third instar larvae fat body and haemolymph using a diabetic rabbit model compared this to the effect obtained with same substances Lucilia sericata larvae. Alloxan (a toxic glucose analogue) was used induce experimental diabetes in twelve rabbits. Dorsal wounds were made each animal they infected Staphylococcus aureus Pseudomonas aeruginosa. They then treated lyophilized selected blowflies' bodies. Each wound by rating scales histological...
Infectious keratitis is a vision-threatening microbial infection. The increasing antimicrobial resistance and the fact that severe cases often evolve into corneal perforation necessitate development of alternative therapeutics for effective medical management. Genipin, natural crosslinker, was recently shown to exert effects in an ex vivo model keratitis, highlighting its potential serve as novel treatment infectious keratitis. This study aimed evaluate anti-inflammatory genipin...
Establishing the presence of zoonotic gastrointestinal nematodosin soil samples in recreational areas Suba (one largest localities Bogotá, Colombia) between July 2005 and June 2006.The several parasites' eggs, larvae oocysts were determined by initial sedimentation later flotation with Sheather solution; some them responsible for important diseases affecting human population.Parasites identified 376 samples: Ancylostoma (10.7%), eggs (0.6%), Toxocara (5.8%), Strongyloides (3.3%), Dipylidium...
Abstract Intensive use of chemical acaricides for the control cattle ticks ( Rhipicephalus microplus ) has led to development multiple acaricide resistance in Colombia. The present study aimed characterize, using toxicological bioassays and molecular biology techniques, profile a tick strain isolated from Arauca state, Northeast Commercial were used adult immersion tests determine its vitro efficacies. Deltamethrin showed very low activity (4–7.3%), mixture cypermethrin chlorpyrifos had...
