Abstract Cardioviruses cause serious disease, mainly in rodents, including diabetes, myocarditis, encephalomyelitis, and multiple sclerosis–like disseminated encephalomyelitis. Recently, a human virus isolate obtained 25 years ago, termed Saffold virus, was sequenced classified as cardiovirus. We conducted systematic molecular screening for Saffold-like viruses 844 fecal samples from patients with gastroenteritis Germany Brazil, across all age groups. Six cardioviruses were identified <6 of...
Abstract Human parechoviruses (HPeVs) were detected by reverse transcription–PCR in 16.1% of 335 stool samples from children <6 years age with enteritis Salvador, Brazil. Whole genome sequencing 1 sample showed a novel HPeV that has been designated as HPeV8.
Background Recent studies have shown that probiotics, most commonly Lactobacillus GG, may be useful in treating acute gastroenteritis. However, beneficial effects appear to limited a modest decrease the duration of diarrhea. No evaluated this therapy moderate severe dehydrating diarrhea metabolic facility. Methods Male children less than 2 years age were admitted unit Department Pediatrics at Federal University Bahia, Brazil, with dehydration and randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled...
Abstract To determine possible cosavirus association with clinical disease, we used real-time reverse transcription PCR to test children and HIV-positive adults in Brazil without gastroenteritis. Thirteen (3.6%) of 359 gastroenteritis tested positive, as did 69 (33.8%) 204 controls. Low prevalence, frequent viral co-infections, low fecal RNA concentrations argue against human pathogenicity.
Healthy 9- to 48-month-old children (n = 133) were randomized receive a cow's-milk-based follow-on formula (control) or the same with polydextrose and galactooligosaccharides (PDX/GOS) for 108 days. Pediatricians assessed diarrheal disease, stool pattern, acute respiratory infection, systemic antibiotic use, growth. The 2 groups had similar weight-for-length/height z score odds of having use; however, PDX/GOS greater increased defecation than control (P ≤ 0.01). Addition PDX GOS was well...
Abstract Background Effects of palm olein (POL) on calcium and fat metabolic balance gastrointestinal (GI) tolerance have been clinically evaluated but its use in combination with kernel oil (PKO), canola has not similarly assessed infants. Methods Calcium GI were 33 healthy term infants (age = 68-159d) a randomized, double-blinded, 14d crossover trial at day care center Salvador, Brazil; followed by 4d hospital ward study 17 the male subjects. The compared two commercially available...
The multifactorial etiology of gastroenteritis emphasizes the need for different laboratory methods to identify or exclude infectious agents and evaluate severity diarrheal disease. To diagnose in diarrheic children some fecal markers associated with intestinal integrity. study group comprised 45 disease, tested enteropathogens malabsorption markers, 76 whose feces were used fat evaluation by traditional acid steatocrit tests. We observed acute diarrhea 80% persistent 20%. Of individuals...
This study identified the complete genomic sequence of four type 2 and 3 human Saffold-like cardioviruses (SLCVs) isolated in Germany Brazil. The secondary structures SLCV internal ribosome entry sites (IRESs) were deduced based on RNA base-pairing conservation co-variation, using an established Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) IRES structure as a reference. was highly similar to that TMEV, but motifs critical TMEV for binding polypyrimidine tract-binding protein (PTB)...
Nutrients such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), prebiotics and β-glucan have been associated with reduced incidence of respiratory illnesses allergic manifestations (AM). Our objective was to assess if consumption a cow's milk-based beverage these other nutrients supports respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin health in otherwise well-nourished, healthy children. In this double-blind, randomized, controlled trial, children (1–4 years age) from two daycare centers Brazil were fed three...
To evaluate the incidence of diarrheal disease (DD) and acute respiratory infection (ARI) in children undergoing supplementation zinc other micronutrients through use sprinkles, as well their acceptance by these patients. This was a randomized double-blinded clinical trial 143 healthy institutionalized children, aged 6 to 48 months. They were into two groups received daily - test group (sprinkles), or without control group. Children supplemented for 90 days followed regarding outcomes DD...
Palm olein is used in infant formula fat blends order to match the fatty acid profile of human milk. While effects on balance have been evaluated, use palm combination with kernel oil and supplementation docosahexaenoic (DHA) arachidonic (ARA) has not similarly assessed infants. This study evaluated formulas containing different compositions fat, acids, calcium. In this randomized, crossover, double-blinded study, 33 healthy term infants (68–159 ± 3 days age at enrollment) were fed two for...
Background: Microscopy and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) are routinely used for Cryptosporidium diagnosis, without differentiating the parasite species. Methods: Children’s feces were analyzed by modified Ziehl-Neelsen (mZN) ELISA diagnosis polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism species identification. Results: frequency was 2.6%. The sensitivity specificity of 85.7% 99.7%, respectively, with excellent concordance mZN (kappa=0.854). Parasite...
Due to high genome plasticity, the evolutionary fate and geographical history of picornaviruses is hard follow. Here, we determined complete coding sequences eight human parechoviruses (HPeV) types 1, 5 6 directly from clinical samples Brazil. The capsid genes these strains were not remarkably different European, North American Japanese HPeV. Full analysis revealed frequent intertypic recombination in non-structural region. In addition, evidence between viruses same type capsid-encoding...
Introduction. Giardia duodenalis is an intestinal protozoan with a high prevalence in children of developing countries. Molecular studies revealed great genetic diversity G. duodenalis, assemblages A and B found mainly humans. Despite its importance, the information on molecular epidemiology human giardiasis still limited Brazil.Objective. To characterize isolates from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.Materials methods. positive fecal samples were obtained 71 two day care centers 39 users clinical...
In order to assess the effects of juice feedings during acute diarrhea a double-blind, randomized study was performed in 90 children, mean age 10 +/- 4.28 months. Thirty patients with were fed twice-daily 15 ml/kg Apple Juice (AJ), 30 received White Grape (WGJ), and given colored flavored water (WA) as part their appropriate dietary intake. The duration severity main endpoint variables metabolic unit. similar among 3 groups, had for 50-64 hours prior admission, dehydrated when admitted unit...

Segmental absence of the intestinal musculature is a rare cause acute abdomen most likely associated with perforation and sepsis in neonates adults. We present case 10-year-old boy who developed was treated right hemicolectomy partial resection ileum. The ileum showed 20-cm-long stenotic segment showing prominent thinning wall. This occurred an older child, which appears to be when comparing literature. bowel defect also largest described date, indicating potential effect atonic leading...
Objective The aim of the current study was to evaluate safety a new reduced protein (2.1 g/100 kcal) infant formula containing 4 g/L 90% galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and 10% fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS). Methods Healthy term infants from Brazil were enrolled. Those born human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive mothers randomized test ( n = 65) or control 63) group. Infants HIV-negative either exclusively breast-fed 79) received mixed diet (breast milk formula, 65). Between 2 weeks...
