Here, we show that an alpha-proteobacterium of the genus Asaia is stably associated with larvae and adults Anopheles stephensi, important mosquito vector Plasmodium vivax, a main malaria agent in Asia. bacteria dominate mosquito-associated microbiota, as shown by 16S rRNA gene abundance, quantitative PCR, transmission electron microscopy situ-hybridization genes. In adult mosquitoes, sp. present high population density female gut male reproductive tract. from An. stephensi has been cultured...
Bacterial symbionts of insects have been proposed for blocking transmission vector-borne pathogens. However, in many vector models the ecology and their capability cross-colonizing different hosts, an important feature symbiotic control approach, is poorly known. Here we show that acetic acid bacterium Asaia, previously found malaria mosquito Anopheles stephensi, also present in, capable other sugar-feeding phylogenetically distant genera orders. PCR, real-time PCR situ hybridization...
SUMMARY The hard tick Ixodes ricinus (Ixodidae) is the sole animal thus far shown to harbour an intra-mitochondrial bacterium, which has recently been named Midichloria mitochondrii . objectives of this work were (i) screen ixodid ticks for -related bacteria and (ii) determine whether these exploit niche in other species. Our main goal was discover further models peculiar form symbiosis. We have performed a PCR screening samples collected Italy, North America Iceland. A total 7 newly...
Heartworm antigen testing is considered sensitive and specific. Currently available tests are reported as detecting a glycoprotein found predominantly in the reproductive tract of female worm can reach specificity close to 100%. Main concerns regard sensitivity case light infections, presence immature females or cases all-male infections. Research development have been aimed at increasing sensitivity. Recently, heat treatment serum prior has shown result an increase positive test results,...
Intestinal parasites of dogs represent a serious threat to human health due their zoonotic potential. Thus, metropolitan areas presenting high concentrations pets and urban fecal contamination on public are at sanitary risk. Major aim this survey was determine prevalence in dog samples collected from soil Milan (north-western Italy). Differences distribution were explored by geographical information system- (GIS-) based approach, risk factors (human density, sizes green parks, areas)...
Abstract Background Parasites that infect cats include protozoa, helminths and arthropods, many of which are transmissible to humans. Effective control relies on a good knowledge parasite distribution the risk factors for infection. The present study was aimed at evaluating prevalence major feline parasites in Italy associated with their occurrence. Methods Over 12-month period, feces, hair ectoparasites from naturally infected feral colonies, shelters private households were analyzed 13...
Background Tularemia is a zoonosis caused by the Francisella tularensis, highly infectious Gram-negative coccobacillus. Due to easy dissemination, multiple routes of infection, high environmental contamination and morbidity mortality rates, considered potential bioterrorism threat classified as category A select agent CDC. Tick bites are among most prevalent modes transmission, ticks have been indicated possible reservoir, although their reservoir competence has yet be defined. Tick-borne...
Abstract An acute outbreak of Taenia hydatigena cysticercosis, causing mortality in 5 21 (23.8%) female lambs, is reported. Gross post-mortem examinations and histology showed Cysticercus tenuicollis as the cause death. Biochemical parameters infected lambs confirmed severe hepatitis. Praziquantel, given once at 15 mg/kg body weight (bw), was administered a dramatic improvement clinical condition biochemical observed up to 30 days following treatment.
