Here, we show that an alpha-proteobacterium of the genus Asaia is stably associated with larvae and adults Anopheles stephensi, important mosquito vector Plasmodium vivax, a main malaria agent in Asia. bacteria dominate mosquito-associated microbiota, as shown by 16S rRNA gene abundance, quantitative PCR, transmission electron microscopy situ-hybridization genes. In adult mosquitoes, sp. present high population density female gut male reproductive tract. from An. stephensi has been cultured...

Abstract The paper gives evidence that the vocal activity of elephants varies with group size, composition and reproductive status, elephants' calling patterns could therefore provide basis for a remote monitoring system. We examined 3‐week set array‐based audio recordings savanna ( Loxodonta africana ), searching diagnostic acoustic parameters. An array made it possible to locate recorded sounds attribute calls particular or elephant groups. Simultaneous video document visible behaviour...

Abstract We report 14 cases of human subcutaneous dirofilariasis caused by Dirofilaria repens, diagnosed from February 2003 through July 2004, in patients Rostov-on-Don, Russia. Serologic analysis showed evidence high risk exposure to D. repens. Surveillance studies on prevalence and prevention effectiveness canine infection are needed control this emerging zoonosis.

Babesia caballi and Theileria equi are the causative agents of equine piroplasmosis. In this epidemiological study, 294 horses reared in a rural area northern Italy were studied. During January 2008-January 2009, blood samples taken for serology (indirect fluorescent antibody test) polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Data on geographical area, sex, age collected statistical analysis risk factors associated with infection. A seroprevalence 8.5% was found: 8.2% animals positive anti-T. antibodies...

Heartworm antigen testing is considered sensitive and specific. Currently available tests are reported as detecting a glycoprotein found predominantly in the reproductive tract of female worm can reach specificity close to 100%. Main concerns regard sensitivity case light infections, presence immature females or cases all-male infections. Research development have been aimed at increasing sensitivity. Recently, heat treatment serum prior has shown result an increase positive test results,...

Abstract Background Parasites that infect cats include protozoa, helminths and arthropods, many of which are transmissible to humans. Effective control relies on a good knowledge parasite distribution the risk factors for infection. The present study was aimed at evaluating prevalence major feline parasites in Italy associated with their occurrence. Methods Over 12-month period, feces, hair ectoparasites from naturally infected feral colonies, shelters private households were analyzed 13...
