Background
Inhibitors of steroid synthesis have been reported to exert antidepressive effects, according preliminary findings.
Objective
To test whether the addition metyrapone standard antidepressants induces a more rapid, efficacious, and sustained treatment response in patients with major depression.
Design
Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
Setting
Hospitalized care.
Patients
Sixty-three inpatients aDSM-IVdiagnosis...

Knowledge of pharmacotherapeutic treatment options in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has grown considerably over the past 40 years. Serotonergic antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and clomipramine, are established pharmacologic first-line OCD. Medium to large dosages acute for at least 3 months recommended until efficacy is assessed. In case significant improvement, maintenance necessary. Unfortunately, about half patients do not respond...

Disorganized trauma memory seems to play an important role in the pathogenesis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is unclear whether organization nonautobiographical material (i.e., sequence memory) also impaired PTSD. A novel task designed assess for content and order information was administered survivors with (n = 26) without PTSD 55) as well nontraumatized healthy adults 30). In addition, traumatized participants were asked give a detailed narrative traumatic event...

This study investigated whether lactate-induced panic attacks in patients with disorder would activate atrial natriuretic hormone, which could explain the missing ACTH and cortisol response found this kind of experimentally induced panic.Sodium lactate placebo infusions were administered to 10 healthy comparison subjects, hormone responses two groups compared.During infusion both seven who had eight subjects did not responded increased plasma concentrations but more pronounced surges...

Interactions between the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) system and melatonin secretion have been demonstrated, but only effects of on activity HPA studied in man. Alterations described as low-melatonin syndrome demonstrated patients suffering from a major depressive episode, an inhibitory factor has postulated. We investigated whether corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), which is thought to be involved abnormalities depressed patients, can also suppress healthy volunteers. Ten...

Background
Panic attacks induced by administration of cholecystokinin tetrapeptide (CCK-4) have been evaluated as a valuable tool to investigate the neurobiological mechanisms involved in panic anxiety. The rationale study effects natriuretic peptides on CCK-4 response is derived from observations that atrial peptide (ANP) released during humans and has anxiolyticlike actions various animal models.
Methods
A double-blind, placebo-controlled design was conducted 9 patients...

Although there is evidence for memory impairment in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), it remains unclear whether confined to verbal material or nonverbal also affected. We examined and free recall recognition 40 patients with PTSD healthy controls. Analyses showed that displayed attenuated performance both short- long-term recall, which was not further moderated by type of material. The influence attention, intelligence, depression investigated. Our findings suggest are compromised PTSD.

Although acupuncture treatment is increasingly in demand among psychiatric patients, to date no studies have investigated the effectiveness of auricular (AA) treating anxiety disorders or major depressive disorder. Thus, this study aimed compare AA versus progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), a standardized and accepted method. To compare autonomic and neuroendocrine responses during lactate-induced panic attacks, heart rate variability cortisol atrial natriuretic hormone (ANH) levels were measured in patients with attacks healthy control subjects. In a randomized double-blind design, all subjects received either 10 ml/kg body weight of 0.5 M racemic sodium lactate or normal saline from 1100 to 1120. Spectral analysis the R-R interval analog electrocardiograms was performed, total (0.001-0.45 Hz), low-frequency...

The effect of a fat and protein rich test meal 800 kcal on subjective satiety ratings plasma cholecystokinin (CCK) 8-S was studied in 18 acutely ill patients with anorexia nervosa, 11 former anorectic patients, who were weight recovered for at least 4 years, 25 healthy young women.
