We introduce a new problem domain for activity recognition: the analysis of children's social and communicative behaviors based on video audio data. specifically target interactions between children aged 1-2 years an adult. Such arise naturally in diagnosis treatment developmental disorders such as autism. publicly-available dataset containing over 160 sessions 3-5 minute child-adult interaction. In each session, adult examiner followed semi-structured play interaction protocol which was...
We present the evaluation of BrailleTouch, an accessible keyboard for blind users on touchscreen smartphones. Based standard Perkins Brailler, BrailleTouch implements a six-key chorded braille soft keyboard. Eleven participants typed 165 twenty-minute sessions three mobile devices: 1) smartphone; 2) tablet; and 3) commercial with physical keys. Expert averaged 23.2 words per minute (wpm) smartphone. The fastest participant, novice, achieved 32.1 wpm during his first session. Overall, were...
Most Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers are accustomed to the process of formal ethics review for their evaluation or field trial protocol. Although this varies by country, underlying principles universal. While is often a formality, research lab-based studies with vulnerable users, requirements can be challenging navigate -- common occurrence in social sciences; yet, many cases, foreign HCI researchers. Nevertheless, increase new areas such as mobile technologies marginalized...
This paper outlines the main steps towards an open and adaptive simulation method for human-robot collaboration (HRC) in production engineering supported by virtual reality (VR). The work is based on latest software developments gaming industry, addition to already commercially available hardware that robust reliable. allows overcome VR limitations of industrial provided manufacturing machine producers it open-source community programming approach also leads significant advantages such as...
Texting is the essence of mobile communication and connectivity, as evidenced by today's teenagers, tomorrow's workforce. Fifty-four percent American teens contact each other daily texting, compared to face-to-face (33%) talking on phone (30%) according Pew Research Center's Internet & Life Project, 2010. Arguably, technologies support text input poorly, primarily due size constraints devices. This case for everyone, but it particularly relevant visually impaired. According World Health...
Ubiquitous technology, coupled with a surge in empirical research on people that engages multiple challenges their lives, is increasingly revealing the potential for HCI to enrich lives of vulnerable people. Designing vulnerabilities requires an approach participation sensitive risks possible stigmatization and awareness participant involvement. This workshop will bring together researchers practitioners explore critical issues surrounding designing individuals. We aim provoke discussion...
Because the quality of decision making in road safety is dependent on data which decisions are based, efforts to improve quality, timeliness, and accuracy crash databases crucial. A critical review Australasian, European Union, U.S. was performed, future directions were identified. Major issues included procedures for access data, report forms, severity crashes reported databases, locations, classification, severity. Access could be provided approved professionals through a web-based portal,...
Despite the recent increase in Virtual Reality (VR) technologies employed for training manufacturing operators on industrial robotic tasks, impact of VR methods compared to traditional ones is still unclear. This paper presents an experimental comparison two approaches, with novice performing same tasks a robot and real robot. The hardware selected ABB IRB 120 robot, HTC Vive head mounted display operate it, besides corresponding model developed Unity. Twenty-four students performed actions...
Traffic calming is widely implemented to improve road safety. However, the implementation of traffic devices implies less capacity cross-town roads. The present research used microsimulation study effect on roads based different type and spacing devices. Average delay was calculated. Then, obtained for a fixed device as flow rate from which presented exponential growth. Capacity varied between 810 1300 vehicles per hour lane with 25 400 meters.
We present a longitudinal investigation of Tableau Machine, an intelligent entity that interprets and reflects the lives occupants in home. created Machine (TM) to explore parts home life are unrelated accomplishing tasks. Task support for "smart homes" has inspired many researchers community. consider design experience, orthogonal dimension task-centric life. TM produces abstract visualizations on large LCD every few minutes, driven by set four overhead cameras capture sense social domestic...
Extended reality (XR) enables both new opportunities but also introduces barriers for inclusion in society. Furthermore, XR is less researched than web, desktop and mobile applications. This position paper presents the concept of an platform inclusion, with purpose to make people on autism spectrum other disabilities, more independent help from others everyday life situations. Based previous research, our that, through current future technologies combined civic artificial intelligence, it...
In the established procedural model of information visualization, first operation is to transform raw data into tables [1]. The transforms typically include abstractions that aggregate and segment relevant are usually defined by a human, user or programmer. theme this paper for video, should be supported low level computer vision. High reasoning still resides in human analyst, while part perception handled computer. To illustrate approach, we present Viz-A-Vis, an overhead video capture...
Abstract This study investigates to which extent students’ understanding of the physical phenomenon torque can be improved through use visualization technology, in particular augmented reality (AR). The students first-year course Mechanics I at KTH participated by taking two tests on torque. In between those tests, a subgroup user where they used an AR application solve problems regarding results pre-test and post-test indicate that who app their greater than ones did not app. However,...
Minimally invasive neurosurgery (MIS) involves inserting a medical instrument, e.g., catheter, through small incision to target an area inside the patient's body. Training surgeons perform MIS is challenging since surgical site not directly visible from their perspective. In this paper, we conducted two pilot studies focused on object shapes and colors collect preliminary results influence depth perception for in Virtual Reality. first study (N = 8), participants inserted virtual catheter...
