We investigated the prevalence of Bartonella infections in ticks, mites and small mammals (rodents, insectivores weasels) collected during 2001 through 2004, from various military installations training sites Korea, using PCR sequence analysis 16S rRNA, 23S rRNA groEL heat shock protein genes. The spp. was 5.2% (n = 1,305 sample pools) 19.1% 21) mesostigmatid 13.7% 424 individuals) mammals. within family Ixodidae was, 4.4% 1,173) Haemaphysalis longicornis (scrub tick), 2.7% 74) H. flava,...

The complete M segment sequences of hantaviruses amplified from tissues a patient with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in the northeastern United States and white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus, New York were 99% identical differed those Four Corners virus by 23%. serum this failed to recognize conserved, immunodominant epitope G1 glycoprotein. Collectively, these findings indicate that P. leucopus harbors genetically antigenically distinct causes syndrome.

Seoul virus (SEOV) poses a worldwide public health threat. This virus, which is harbored by Rattus norvegicus and R. rattus rats, the causative agent of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in humans, has been reported Asia, Europe, Americas, Africa.Defining SEOV genome sequences plays critical role development preventive therapeutic strategies against unique hantavirus. We applied multiplex PCR-based next-generation sequencing to obtain from clinical reservoir host...

Retinal dystrophy (RD) is a broad group of hereditary disorders with heterogeneous genotypes and phenotypes. Current available genetic testing for these diseases complicated, time consuming, expensive. This study was conducted to develop apply microarray-based, high-throughput resequencing system detect sequence alterations in genes related inherited RD.A customized 300-kb chip, Retina-Array, developed 267,550 bases both sense antisense 1470 exons spanning 93 involved RD. The merozoite surface protein-1 (MSP-1) of Plasmodium vivax exhibits great antigenic diversity among different isolates this parasite. This antigen is a useful genetic marker for studying the polymorphism natural P. parasite populations. One or more these populations has been responsible resurgent malaria now occurring in Korea. paper reports analysis highly polymorphic region between interspecies conserved blocks 5 and 6 MSP-1 gene, using polymerase chain reaction to amplify DNA fragment...

The amino-acid sequences corresponding to the circumsporozoite protein (CSP) of Plasmodium vivax fall into two main types, VK210 and VK247, each which has a characteristic tandem repeat. When repetitive domains CSP gene from six isolates P. South Korea were sequenced they found show total 20 repeats, repeat patterns that are regular distinct those other isolates. Korean parasites be most similar three China (CH-3, CH-4, CH-5) and, particularly, one North Korea. A sequence (AGGNAANKKAEDAGGNA)...

To determine the prevalence of Bartonella species and identify which naturally infects striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius) in Republic Korea (ROK), spleens from 200 mice were assayed by nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) targeting RNA subunit beta (rpoB) gene 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region for members genus Bartonella. Utilizing PCR techniques, spp. ranged 31.5% (63/200) to 62.0% (124/200) rpoB ITS fragments, respectively. The most prevalent species, grahamii, was...
