As of 18 August 2022, 1087 confirmed cases monkeypox are reported in the Netherlands. Monkeypox virus likely ends up wastewater because i) skin flakes from areas affected by typical rash and scabbing may wash off, ii) has been detected animal human feces. Here we describe a method to qualitatively detect DNA wastewater, that prove valuable surveillance tool for outbreaks.
Background Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater offers a near real-time tool to track circulation at local scale. However, individual measurements sewage are noisy, inherently variable and can be left-censored. Aim We aimed infer latent virus loads comprehensive surveillance programme that includes all treatment plants (STPs) the Netherlands covers 99.6% Dutch population. Methods applied multilevel Bayesian penalised spline model estimate time- STP-specific based on water flow-adjusted...
The Dutch national open database on COVID-19 has been incrementally expanded since its start 30 April 2020 and now includes datasets symptoms, tests performed, individual-level positive cases deaths, deaths among vulnerable populations, settings of transmission, hospital ICU admissions, SARS-CoV-2 variants, viral loads in sewage, vaccinations the effective reproduction number. This data is collected by municipal health services, laboratories, hospitals, sewage treatment plants, vaccination...
Wastewater-based epidemiological surveillance at municipal wastewater treatment plants has proven to play an important role in COVID-19 surveillance. Considering international passenger hubs contribute extensively global transmission of viruses, this type location may be added value as well. The aim study is explore the potential long-term a large hub additional tool for public health during different stages pandemic. Here, we present analysis SARS-CoV-2 viral loads airport by...
Since the start of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, wastewater surveillance programs were established, or upscaled, many countries around world and have proven to be a cost-effective way monitoring infectious disease pathogens. Many these use RT-qPCR, quantify viral concentrations samples based on standard curves, by including preparations reference material with known nucleic acid virus RT-qPCR analyses. In high-throughput it is possible combine data from multiple previous runs, circumventing...
Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) has become a widespread method to monitor transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and other human pathogens in Europe. We conducted survey about WBS systems’ objectives, approaches, representativeness usefulness 10 invited European countries 2023, i.e. Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands Norway. All completed study questionnaire their systems, shared information as deemed relevant. systems primarily monitored national...
We report on interference studies in the internal and external degrees of freedom metastable triplet helium atoms trapped near quantum degeneracy a $$1.5 \,\upmu {\mathrm{m}}$$ optical dipole trap. Applying single $$\pi /2$$ rf pulse we demonstrate that 50% initially $$m=+1$$ state can be transferred to magnetic field insensitive $$m=0$$ state. Two pulses with varying time delay allow Ramsey-type measurement Zeeman shift for high precision $$2\,^3S_1$$ – $$2\,^1S_0$$ transition frequency....
Wastewater-based surveillance enables tracking of SARS-CoV-2 circulation at a local scale in near-real time. Here we investigate the relation between virus loads and number hospital admissions Netherlands. Inferred from August 2020 until February 2022 each 344 Dutch municipalities are analysed Bayesian multilevel Poisson regression to relate daily age-stratified (in groups 20 years) admissions. Covariates include municipal vaccination coverages stratified by age dose (first, second, booster)...
SUMMARY Background Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater offers an unbiased and near real-time tool to track circulation at a local scale, next other epidemic indicators such as hospital admissions test data. However, individual measurements sewage are noisy, inherently variable, can be left-censored. Aim We aimed infer latent virus loads comprehensive surveillance program that includes all treatment plants (STPs) the Netherlands covers 99.6% Dutch population. Methods A multilevel...
We have observed Bloch oscillations of a ${}^{4}{\text{He}}^{*}$ Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice at 1557.3 nm. Due to its low mass, metastable helium was efficiently accelerated orders magnitude faster than demonstrated with other atoms. In horizontal lattice, we could transfer total $800\ensuremath{\hbar}k$ momentum by shuttling the atomic cloud back and forth 50 times between $4\ensuremath{\hbar}k$ $\ensuremath{-}4\ensuremath{\hbar}k$ states efficiency over 99% per cycle....
