足摺宇和海国立公園には高知県土佐清水市から愛媛県宇和島市にかけての沿岸部の広い範囲が指定されているが,この海域は水温と沿岸域の生態系構造の南北勾配が特徴的である。気候変動の影響による生態系や生態系サービスの変化が想定される中で,保護区内で生態系をどのように利用・保全するかが課題である。本研究では,対象域で優占する造礁サンゴと大型海藻に着目し,潜水調査により分布を把握するとともに,関係者への聞き取り調査や行政文書の解析等によりこれらの生物資源が地域でどのように利用・保全されているかを整理することを目的とした。調査の結果,実際にサンゴが分布する海域と観光利用や保全活動が実施されている地域が異なることがあり,空間的なギャップが生じていることが示された。一方,大型海藻に関しては養殖業が盛んな地域では保全の必要性に対する認識は乏しく,保全活動の規模もサンゴと比べて限定的であることが明らかとなった。

インドネシア国リアウ州の泥炭島を対象として,再湿地化によるCO2放出量および火災リスクの低減効果を定量評価した.観測した水文気象データとCO2放出速度の相関分析により,熱帯泥炭湿地における土壌からのCO2放出速度は,気温や地温の上昇によって促進され,地下水位や土壌水分量の増加によって抑制されることが示された.地下水位-CO2放出量推定モデルを適用した結果,地下水位計算値のNash係数が0.5以上となり実測値を概ね再現した.短期連続観測によるCO2放出速度の実測値と計算値の推定誤差はRMSEで2.5(tCha-1 year-1),相対誤差率は19%であった.モデルを用いて,再湿地化によるCO2放出量および不飽和層の削減率を計算した結果,乾季の排水路水位を100cm堰上げすることにより 17.2%のCO2削減効果が得られ,火災リスクの指標となる不飽和層厚さは46.4%削減される結果が得られた.
