Oxidizing agents are powerful activators of factors responsible for the transcriptional activation cytokine-encoding genes involved in tissue injury. In this study we show evidence that STAT3 is a transcription factor whose activity modulated by H2O2 human lymphocytes, which endogenous catalase had previously been inhibited. H2O2-induced nuclear translocation to form sequence-specific DNA-bound complexes was evidenced immunoblotting fractions and...

We describe here a specific calcineurin activity in neutrophil lysates, which is dependent on Ca2+, inhibited by trifluoroperazine, and insensitive to okadaic acid. Immunoblotting experiments using antiserum recognized both the A B chains of calcineurin. Neutrophils treated with cyclosporin or FK 506 showed dose-dependent inhibition activity. The effect oxidant compounds was also investigated. hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), where catalase aminotriazole, exhibited However, addition reducing agents...

Abstract Background Acinetobacter baumannii causes frequently nosocomial infections worldwide. Its ability to survive on dry surfaces facilitates its spread and the persistence of endemic situations, especially in intensive care units (ICUs). The objective this paper is describe a multicomponent intervention program designed control hyperendemic multidrug-resistant A. (MDR-Ab) characterize impact. A currently ongoing randomized trial has revealed that the Mediterranean diet, rich in virgin olive oil or nuts, reduces systolic blood pressure high-risk cardiovascular patients. Here, we present a structural substudy to assess effect of Mediterranean-style diet supplemented with nuts on erythrocyte membrane properties 36 hypertensive participants after 1 year intervention. Erythrocyte lipid composition, reconstituted membranes, and serum concentrations inflammatory markers are reported....

The influence of body mass index (BMI) on oral cancer risk was evaluated in 375 incident cases and age–gender-matched hospital-based controls. Low BMIs at diagnosis 2 years before were associated with significantly elevated odds ratios (OR for BMI ⩽22 vs >26 kg m−2; 3.64; 95% confidence interval, CI: 2.27–5.82 3.31; 2.04–5.39, respectively). association low BMI, however, tended to be weaker nonsignificant among never smokers drinkers.

Abstract It has been demonstrated that neutrophils are responsible for the release of large amounts inflammatory chemokine interleukin-8 (IL-8), associated with inflammation. To further define mechanisms implicated, we have analyzed response human from allergic patients to specific antigens or challenge anti-immunoglobulin (Ig)E antibodies. Neutrophils showed a dose- and time-dependent production IL-8. The cytokine was parallel expression IL-8 mRNA by polymerase chain reaction. This...
