Objective: To determine the prevalence of genotypic resistance to nucleoside analogues (NA) in a large group HIV-infected individuals Spain, some whom had no previous treatment with antiretroviral drugs (antiretroviral-naive) and such experience (antiretroviral-experienced). Setting: Cross-sectional study outpatient clinics three reference hospitals for HIV/AIDS located Barcelona, Madrid Seville, Spain. Patients methods: Primary mutant genotypes were examined plasma HIV RNA collected from...

Abstract: Melatonin modulates a wide array of physiological events with pleiotropic effects on the immune system. While relevance specific melatonin membrane receptors has been well established for several biological functions, retinoic acid-related orphan receptor alpha (RORα) suggested as mediator nuclear signalling by results obtained from pharmacological approaches. However, melatonin-mediated downstream effect cannot be ruled out, and further evidence is needed to support direct...

Uncoupling protein (UCP) is essential to brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis and, hence, cold adaptation and energy balance. The sympathetic nervous system, via norepinephrine cAMP, thyroid hormone seem be the major regulators of UCP expression. T3 potentiates effect for adaptive response this cold. goal present studies was investigate whether directly stimulates transcription rat gene, as suggested by in vivo results, if so, identify characterize sequences involved. We examined gene...

beta 3-adrenergic receptors (AR) are predominantly expressed in brown (BAT) and white adipose tissue (WAT), being more abundant the former. There is growing interest these because of their potential to be pharmacologically targeted control energy expenditure lipid accretion. We have examined, BAT WAT rats, effect thyroid hormone on expression 3-AR contribution cAMP generation. Receptor density was assessed with nonselective ligand [125I]-cyanopindolol ([125I]-CYP) highly selective agonist...

We evaluated two pineal melatonin deficient mice described in the literature, i.e., C57BL/6 and Swiss mice, as animal models for studying immunomodulatory action of melatonin. Plasma levels strains were detectable, but lower than control C3H/HENHSD mice. Since these are suppose to be an extrapineal synthesis may contribute plasma levels. Regarding cells tissues from immune system, all them found synthesize although at low N-acetyltransferase (AANAT) mRNA was also amplified order analyze...

Health assessment of the transplanted organ is very important due to relationship long-term survival transplant recipients and health maintenance. Nowadays, measurement cell-free DNA from grafts in circulation has been considered a potential biomarker rejection or associated complications an attempt replace reduce liver biopsy. However, methods developed date are expensive extremely time-consuming. Our approach was measure SRY gene, as male biomarker, setting sex-mismatched female donor...

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis is activated by the sympathetic nervous system. BAT responses to norepinephrine are blunted in hypothyroidism and rapidly restored thyroid hormone. We examined rats effects of hormone on beta 1- 2-adrenergic receptors (AR) expression capacity generate cAMP response adrenergic stimulation. Both reduced hypothyroidism. The reduction generation equal or greater than that 1,2-AR; it same whether production stimulated with norepinephrine, selective 3-AR...

Objective To assess the pattern of drug resistance mutations selected in HIV-1-infected patients failing a first line triple combination therapy including indinavir. Patients and methods Plasma samples from 87 collected at time virological rebound (> 50 HIV-RNA copies/ml) were examined for presence drug-resistant genotypes. Results The mean level plasma viraemia was 7824 HIV-1 RNA copies/ml 73 subjects with good compliance, whereas it 359 460 14 who admitted to poor adherence. Genetic...

Objective To examine the prevalence of resistance mutations to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) and protease (PI) in a representative HIV-1 population Spain. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted including 601 HIV-infected patients who attended 20 Spanish hospitals June 1998. Drug resistant were examined using hybridization line probe assays (LiPA). The 6 bp insert at position 69 codon 75 mutant by sequencing analysis specimens lacking reactivity 69/70 74 bands on...

SUMMARY Previous studies have shown a slow recovery of naive CD4+ T cell counts after anti-retroviral therapy in HIV-1-infected adults, which is accordance with thymus atrophy puberty. Here we investigate whether or not different patterns and CD8+ repopulation are present adult child patients undergoing treatment. Thus, 25 adults under highly active 10 children combined were retrospectively analysed for subpopulations at baseline (T0) around week 12 (T1) 24 (T2) Mean serum HIV-1 RNA levels...

Genotypic resistance to antiretroviral drugs was examined in 684 individuals attending 18 outpatient clinics distributed across Spain June 2000. Compared with similar surveys conducted before 1998, the prevalence of nucleosides has declined significantly among naive chronic HIV carriers. In contrast, pre-treated patients increased; all three drug families having been recognized nearly a quarter patients.

Objective: Immune reconstitution after highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in HIV-infected patients has led to an increase the number of new CD4 T lymphocytes. Neolymphopoiesis thymus been proposed as a mechanism T-cell regeneration. Nevertheless, factors involved regeneration cells by thymic-dependent pathways under HAART are still unknown and might be relevance HIV infection. SUMMARY Age is one of the main factors involved in rapidity and magnitude CD4+ T cell repopulation human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients on highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART). Abstract: In the present study we investigated synergistic effect of melatonin and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) on cyclic AMP production in human blood lymphocytes. As shown by our group previously, VIP alone behaved as a potent activator On other hand, did not affect intracellular levels nucleotide at any time or dose studied. However, when cells were incubated with plus VIP, potentiated peptide. This can be observed presence physiological doses both (10–100 pM) (1–100 pM). The is...
