Lactobacillus acidophilus group and a Lact. reuteri isolated from human faeces were examined for production of antimicrobial agents against 16 strains six species food-borne enteric pathogenic bacteria. Several gasseri showed wide inhibitory activity the tested Gassericin A produced by LA39 was one most widely active bacteriocins. It bactericidal without causing cell lysis.

Lactobacillus reuteri LA 6, isolated from infant faeces, produced an antimicrobial agent active against acidophilus JCM 2125, delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus 1002 and lactis 1148 1248. The was sensitive to proteolytic enzymes retained activity after heating at 100°C for 20 min. This a bacteriocin has been designated as reutericin 6. A new method was developed for the determination of extracellular polysaccharides produced by microorganisms. Culture supernatants were ultrafiltered through a membrane having molecular exclusion limit 5000 Da.
