Background Many studies have suggested that caregiving has a detrimental impact on health. However, these conclusions are challenged by research which finds evidence of comparative survivorship advantage, as well work controls for group differences in the demand care. Methods We use large record linkage study England and Wales to investigate mortality risks carers identified 2001 Census. The analysis focuses individuals aged 35–74 living with others private households distinction is made...
Background/Aims: Recent updates to the Nikkiso Aquarius continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) platform allowed us develop a post-dilution protocol for regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) using standard bicarbonate buffered, calcium containing solution with acid dextrose formula-A as source. Our objective was demonstrate that safe and effective. Methods: Prospective audit of consecutive patients receiving RCA...
This paper describes the excavation of an unenclosed ring-groove house at Ardgowan Rise, Inverkip, Inverclyde. The remains were identified during archaeological evaluation carried out prior to development site, and comprised a timber-built structure, defined by two sections postholes, along with interior exterior features. While material from most structural components hearth has been radiocarbon dated Mid-Bronze Age, other features indicate use site Mesolithic Early Bronze Age. Some...
We report on scientific analyses of the only well-preserved ancient human body ever recovered from a North American glacier. The was found high in mountains northwest British Columbia at about 80 km nearest point strongly indented coast southern Alaska. geographical location suggests that young man, aged 20 years, could have lived either mild or continental interior. Preliminary environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and light microscope studies contents digestive tract reveal...
A well-preserved burial, discovered during peat clearing on Langwell Farm in Strath Oykel, Easter Ross, consisted of a stone cist that held the skeleton woman who had died 2200–1960 cal bc. Although contents were disturbed and partly removed before archaeological investigation took place, burial rite can be interpreted to some extent. The woman, her late 20s, been wrapped brown cattle hide, wooden woven objects placed with body. Periodic waterlogging created conditions allowed rare, partial...
This volume presents the results of archaeological investigations between 1996 and 2005, carried out as part Ben Lawers Historic Landscape Project, a multi-disciplinary project based on north Loch Tayside in Central Highlands Scotland (NGR: NN 63763 41298). Archaeological surveys excavations formed core but many other disciplines also contributed to researching this landscape. Some these partner projects are reported here, while others have been presented elsewhere (Tipping et al 2009), some...
Abstract Background/Aims Filgotinib, a Janus-kinase (JAK) 1 preferential inhibitor, was approved for use in the UK moderate or severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) 2021, as monotherapy combination with Methotrexate. Evidence of real-world effectiveness is currently limited. Methods Patients prescribed Filgotinib between December 2021 and August 2022 NHS Lothian were identified from pharmacy registration data. All underwent clinical efficacy assessment at three months. Electronic patient records...
The excavation of a long timber-built structure the early Neolithic near Callander (formerly Perthshire, now Stirling Council area) is described. remains appear to be those measuring maximum c 24m by 8.5m with roughly straight sides and curved terminals, both which have entrance gaps. About 1m in from terminals an arc five posts; interior divided into between seven sections these arcs further three transverse screens or lines posts. pattern division closely resembles that observed at site...
In March 2005, excavations were undertaken by Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division (GUARD) at the Craig Tara Holiday Park, Dunure Road, Ayr in advance of proposed development. Two main archaeological sites examined.
The first, a flat cist cemetery covered an earthen mound, comprised 23 separate burial features varying morphology from two phases burial, including cists, pits and what has been interpreted as ‘boat-shaped’ setting. Nine cremations four possible inhumations...
Reports on work carried out between 1985 and 1986 at a large banked enclosure with an associated smaller enclosure, the edge of ancient bog. It is suggested that site had both ritual domestic associations. There are specialist contributions on: `Soils' by David Jordan (35--7); `Pollen analysis' Susan Ramsay (37--40); `Pottery' Olivia Lelong (40); `Worked stone' Tony Pollard (40--1); `Dendrochronological analysis three wooden posts' Anne Crone (42--3).
The STAC (Severe Terrain Archaeological Campaign) project conducted topographic and archaeological surveys of sea stacks other cliff-bound coastal sites around the Isle Lewis over three annual field seasons from 2003-2005. made use a specialised access system called 'Industrial Rope Access', which proved to be both safe practical way achieving research in such places. first part this report details formation methods project, discusses some relevant geographical issues. second presents...
For over 120 years, the shell middens of western Scotland and series open-air sites on Oronsay have been focus debate in European Mesolithic studies. This paper challenges significance light results from geophysical survey test-excavation a new limpet periwinkle midden dated to late 5th or start 4th millennium cal bc at Port Lobh, Colonsay that offers fresh evidence re-evaluate critically role coastal resources island settlement models ahead Mesolithic–Neolithic transition. Test excavations...
Summary The vegetation history of central Scotland has been summarized from information obtained primarily pollen analysed sites in the region. An assemblage of 366 lithics was recovered during the characterisation archaeological deposits, from deposits which appear to represent a scooped occupation. Analysis and radiocarbon date range 6355-6012 cal BC indicate that it belongs Mesolithic. The site is significant because first Mesolithic material have been by excavation in Girvan area. It also provides additional evidence for class semipermanent sites consisting shallow scoops surrounded turf or earthen banks.
A series of archaeological evaluations and excavations at Laigh Newton in East Ayrshire revealed evidence for intermittent occupation this valley terrace between the Mesolithic Late Iron Age. This paper draws on specialist work undertaken immediately after excavation, together new analyses radiocarbon determinations original samples. It focuses results...
