Significance Our work provides evidence that people who are infected with dengue virus without developing detectable clinical symptoms or prior to the onset of infectious mosquitoes. At a given level viremia, symptom-free were markedly more mosquitoes than clinically symptomatic patients. results fundamentally change current paradigm for epidemiology and control, based on detection virus-infected cases apparent illness.
This article describes the characteristics of 574 deaths associated with pandemic H1N1 influenza up to 16 July 2009. Data (except from Canada and Australia) suggest that elderly may some extent be protected infection. There was underlying disease in at least half fatal cases. Two risk factors seem particular importance: pregnancy metabolic condition (including obesity which has not been considered as factor previous pandemics or seasonal influenza).
Following the report of a non-travel-associated cluster monkeypox cases by United Kingdom in May 2022, 41 countries across WHO European Region have reported 21,098 and two deaths 23 August 2022. Nowcasting suggests plateauing case notifications. Most (97%) are MSM, with atypical rash-illness presentation. Spread is mainly through close contact during sexual activities. Few among women children. Targeted interventions at-risk groups needed to stop further transmission.
Additional studies are required to identify risk factors for hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission health care workers after occupational exposure HCV.We conducted a matched case-control study in 5 European countries from 1 January 1991 through 31 December 2002. Case patients were who experienced seroconversion percutaneous or mucocutaneous HCV. Control subjects HCV-exposed did not experience and with case center period of exposure.Sixty 204 control included the study. All exposed...
There are few structured data available to assess the risks associated with pandemic influenza A(H1N1)v infection according ethnic groups. In countries of Americas and Pacific where these available, attack rates higher in indigenous populations, who also appear be at approximately three six-fold risk developing severe disease dying. These observations may documented factors for death H1N1 (especially generally prevalence diabetes, obesity, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary pregnancy...
Antibiotic misuse in lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs) contributes to the development of antibiotic resistance that can disseminate globally. Strategies specific LMICs seek reduce by humans, but simultaneously improve access, have been proposed. However, most approaches date not considered growing impact animal environmental reservoirs resistance, which threaten exacerbate crisis LMICs. In particular, current strategies do prioritize impacts increased use for terrestrial food-animal...
Tens of thousands people die from dog-mediated rabies annually. Deaths can be prevented through post-exposure prophylaxis for who have been bitten, and the disease eliminated dog vaccination. Current use saves many lives, but availability remains poor in rabies-endemic countries due to high costs, access, supply.
Dengue laboratory diagnosis is essentially based on detection of the virus, its components or antibodies directed against virus in blood samples. Blood, however, may be difficult to draw some patients, especially children, and sampling during outbreak investigations epidemiological studies face logistical challenges limited compliance invasive procedures from subjects. The aim this study was assess possibility using saliva urine samples instead for dengue diagnosis.Serial plasma, were...
After the 2006-2007 epidemic wave of Rift Valley fever (RVF) in East Africa and its circulation Comoros, laboratory case-finding RVF was conducted Mayotte from September 2007 through May 2008. Ten recent human cases were detected, which confirms indigenous transmission RFV virus Mayotte.
Background. The diagnosis of tuberculosis in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected children is challenging. We assessed the performance alternative specimen collection methods for HIV-infected using Xpert MTB/RIF (Xpert). Methods. aged ≤13 years with suspected intrathoracic were enrolled 8 hospitals Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cameroon, and Vietnam. Gastric aspirates taken <10 expectorated sputum samples ≥10 (standard samples); nasopharyngeal aspirate stool all children, a string test was...
Salmonella enterica is a leading cause of human gastroenteritis. S. strains that produce ESBLs (ESBL-Salm) remain rare in Europe and North America, but less known about their prevalence among animal-derived foods countries with weaker food safety practices unregulated veterinary antibiotic use. To examine the characteristics ESBL-Salm from retail meats Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We tested fish, pork chicken two markets for ESBL- carbapenemase-producing September–December 2016, using cefotaxime-...
Dengue is the most prevalent arthropod-borne viral disease. Clinical symptoms of dengue virus (DENV) infection range from classical mild fever to severe, life-threatening shock syndrome. However, DENV infections cause few or no symptoms. Asymptomatic DENV-infected patients provide a unique opportunity decipher host immune responses leading elimination without negative impact on t v 'health. We used an integrated approach transcriptional profiling and immunological analysis comparing...
Human enterovirus 71 (EV-A71) causes hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). EV-A71 circulates in many countries has caused large epidemics, especially the Asia-Pacific region, since 1997. In April 2012, an undiagnosed fatal with neurological involvement respiratory distress occurred young children admitted to Kantha Bopha Children's Hospital Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Most died within a day of hospital admission, causing public panic international concern. this study, we describe (EV) genotypes...
Despite the increased use of vaccination in several Asian countries, Japanese Encephalitis (JE) remains most important cause viral encephalitis Asia humans with an estimated 68,000 cases annually. Considered a rural disease occurring mainly paddy-field dominated landscapes where pigs are amplifying hosts, JE may nevertheless circulate wider range environment given diversity its potential hosts and vectors. The main objective this study was to assess intensity transmission peri-urban outskirt...
Encephalitis is a worldwide public health issue, with substantially high burden among children in southeast Asia. We aimed to determine the causes of encephalitis admitted hospitals across Greater Mekong region by implementing comprehensive state-of-the-art diagnostic procedure harmonised all centres, and identifying clinical characteristics related patients' conditions.
Objectives. To evaluate safety-engineered devices (SEDs) with respect to their effectiveness in preventing needlestick injuries (NSIs) healthcare settings and importance among other preventive measures. Design. Multicenter prospective survey a 1-year follow-up period during which all incident NSIs circumstances were reported. Data prospectively collected 12-month from April 1999 through March 2000. The procedures for the risk of NSI was high also reported 1 week per quarter estimate...
Abstract Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), probably Asian genotype, was first detected in Cambodia 1961. Despite no evidence of acute or recent CHIKV infections since 2000, real-time reverse transcription PCR serum collected 2011 CHIKV, East Central South African genotype. Spatiotemporal patterns and phylogenetic clustering indicate that the originated Thailand.
Abstract We describe a retrospective study on circulation of Zika virus in Cambodia during 2007–2016 among patients with dengue-like symptoms and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Our findings suggest that belongs to the Asia genotype, is endemic, has low prevalence, had low-level impact public health.
Surveillance for avian influenza viruses (AIVs) in poultry and environmental samples was conducted four live-bird markets Cambodia from January through November 2013. Through real-time RT-PCR testing, AIVs were detected 45% of 1048 collected throughout the year. Detection rates ranged 32% 18% duck chicken swabs, respectively, to 75% carcass wash water samples. Influenza A/H5N1 virus 79% positive A 35% all collected. Sequence analysis full-length haemagglutinin (HA) neuraminidase (NA) genes...
