Encephalitis is a worldwide public health issue, with substantially high burden among children in southeast Asia. We aimed to determine the causes of encephalitis admitted hospitals across Greater Mekong region by implementing comprehensive state-of-the-art diagnostic procedure harmonised all centres, and identifying clinical characteristics related patients' conditions.
High levels of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are propagating deaths due to neonatal and paediatric infections globally. This is particular concern in Southeast Asia the Pacific, where healthcare resources constrained access newer agents treat multidrug-resistant pathogens limited. To assess coverage provided by commonly prescribed empiric antibiotic regimens for children low- middle-income countries we built a weighted incidence syndromic combination antibiogram (WISCA), parameterised using...

Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by the saprophytic bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei In northeast Thailand and northern Australia, where highly endemic, a range of molecular tools have been used to study its epidemiology pathogenesis. Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos) melioidosis has recognized as endemic since 1999, no such studies undertaken. We multilocus sequence typing scheme specific for B. investigate nine cases culture-positive recurrence occurring in 514 patients...
Although Southeast Asia is one of the most leptospirosis afflicted regions, little known about diversity and molecular epidemiology causative agents this widespread emerging zoonotic disease. We used whole genome sequencing to examine genetic variation in 75 Leptospira strains isolated from patients Lao PDR (Laos) between 2006 2017. Eleven serogroups 4 species 43 cgMLST-defined clonal groups (CGs) were identified. The prevalent CG was CG272 (n = 18, 26.8%), composed L. interrogans serogroup...
<ns4:p>Background Antimicrobial use in the Laos is among highest Southeast Asia region. The first Lao comprehensive antimicrobial prescribing guidelines have been available since 2021. This study explored determinants of antibiotic decisions and how new were being used. Methods In August 2022, in-depth interviews conducted with 16 prescribers from two hospitals. Participants questioned about their behaviours, attitudes to guidelines, they learned factors influencing uptake. audio-recorded,...

<ns4:p><ns4:bold>Background: </ns4:bold>Case-based surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) provides more actionable data than isolate- or sample-based surveillance. We developed A Clinically Oriented Resistance Network (ACORN) as a lightweight but comprehensive platform, in which we combine clinical collection with diagnostic stewardship, microbiological and visualisation the linked clinical-microbiology dataset. Data are compatible WHO GLASS can be stratified by syndrome other...
Background: Antimicrobial use is a key driver of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We estimated the patterns hospital (AMU) in six hospitals across Laos over four-year period from 2017 to 2020.Methods: Point prevalence surveys (PPS) AMU were conducted at four-month intervals general 2020, using modified Global-PPS data collection tools. The focused on amongst hospitalized patients.Findings: overall inpatient was 71% (4,377/6,188), varying by and survey round 50·4% (135/268) 88·4% (61/69). Of...
