We tested whether chronic melatonin administration in the drinking water would reduce brain mitochondrial impairment that accompanies aging. Brain mitochondria from male and female senescent prone (SAMP8) mice at 5 10 months of age were studied. Mitochondrial oxidative stress was determined by measuring levels lipid peroxidation nitrite, glutathione/glutathione disulfide ratio, glutathione peroxidase reductase activities. Electron transport chain activity phosphorylation capability also...

Heart mitochondria from female senescence-accelerated (SAMP8) and senescence-resistant (SAMR1) mice of 5 or 10 months age, were studied. Mitochondrial oxidative stress was determined by measuring the levels lipid peroxidation, glutathione disulfide peroxidase reductase activities. function assessed activity respiratory chain complexes ATP content. The results show that age-dependent mitochondrial damage in heart SAMP8 accompanied a reduction electron transport complex activities levels....
