A sexually dimorphic cell group is described in the preoptic area of human hypothalamus. Morphometric analysis revealed that volume this nucleus 2.5 ± 0.6 times (mean standard error mean) as large men women, and contains 2.2 0.5 many cells. Between ages 10 93 years, decreases greatly number. Although no function has yet been established for nucleus, it located within an essential gonadotropin release sexual behavior other mammals.

Estrogens play a major role in the modulation of energy balance through central and peripheral actions. Here, we demonstrate that action estradiol (E2) inhibits AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) selectively ventromedial nucleus hypothalamus (VMH), leading to activation thermogenesis brown adipose tissue (BAT) sympathetic nervous system (SNS) feeding-independent manner. Genetic AMPK VMH prevented E2-induced increase BAT-mediated weight loss. Notably,...

Central hypothyroidism (CeH) is a rare form of characterized by insufficient thyroid stimulation due to disturbed pituitary and/or hypothalamic functioning. Due its origin and the whole clinical context, CeH represents challenging condition in practice as it suboptimal accuracy biochemical parameters for diagnosis management. Since no expert consensus or guidance this currently available, task force experts received commitment from European Thyroid Association (ETA) prepare document based on...

The wealth of clinical epidemiological data on the association between intra-abdominal fat accumulation and morbidity sharply contrasts with paucity knowledge about determinants distribution, which cannot be explained merely in terms humoral factors. If it comes to neuronal control, until now, adipose tissue was reported innervated by sympathetic nervous system only, known for its catabolic effect. We hypothesized presence a parasympathetic input stimulating anabolic processes tissue....

At present it is not clear which factors are responsible for the diurnal pattern of plasma leptin levels, although timing food intake and circulating hormones such as glucocorticoids insulin have both been proposed independent determinants. In this study we show that ablation biological clock by thermal lesions hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) completely eliminates levels. By contrast, removal corticosterone signal adrenalectomy replacement did affect More importantly, nocturnal...

Objective : Hypothyroidism is associated with neurocog.nitive impairment. Sparse data suggest that treatment of hypothyroidism, resulting in a return to euthyroidism, may be only partial recovery overall neurocognitive functioning. The aim this study was assess functioning and well-being euthyroid patients primary hypothyroidism on adequate thyroxine (T4) treatment. We also investigated whether serum TSH thyroid antibodies are determinants well-being. Design assessed 141 hypothyroidism....

Changes in hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid function occur patients with a variety of illnesses and are referred to as the euthyroid sick syndrome or nonthyroidal illness (NTI). In NTI, serum concentrations T3 decrease low, even undetectable, levels without giving rise elevated TSH. We hypothesized that decreased activity TRH-producing cells paraventricular nucleus (PVN) contributes persistence low TSH levels.

The hypothalamus uses hormones and the autonomic nervous system to balance energy fluxes in body. Here we show that has a distinct organization different body compartments. same neurons control intraabdominal organs (intraabdominal fat, liver, pancreas), whereas sc adipose tissue located outside abdominal compartment receives input from another set of neurons. This differentiation persists up preautonomic hypothalamus, including biological clock, have depending on they command. Moreover,...

Venous thrombosis has frequently been reported in patients with endogenous Cushing's syndrome (CS).The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence venous thromboembolism (VTE) CS prior treatment and after surgery. We conducted a multicenter cohort at all university medical centers The Netherlands.Consecutive diagnosed benign origin between January 1990 June 2010 were eligible for inclusion. Patients surgically treated nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma served as controls postoperative VTE...

Controversy remains about the value of combined treatment with levothyroxine (LT4) and liothyronine (LT3), compared LT4 alone in primary hypothyroidism. We LT3 a ratio 5:1 or 10:1 monotherapy. conducted double-blind, randomized, controlled trial 141 patients (18–70 yr old) autoimmune hypothyroidism, recruited via general practitioners. Inclusion criteria included: for 6 months more, stable dose wk serum TSH levels between 0.11 4.0 μU/ml (mU/liter). Randomization groups were: 1) continuation...
