Background— Less than one-third of smokers hospitalized with an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) remain abstinent following discharge. We assessed whether varenicline, begun in-hospital, is efficacious for smoking cessation ACS. Methods and Results— conducted a multi-center, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in which ACS were randomized to varenicline or placebo 12 weeks. All patients received low-intensity counseling. The primary end point was point-prevalence abstinence at 24...

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a contagious pathogen causing acute respiratory infections (ARIs). Symptoms range from mild upper tract to potentially life-threatening lower disease (LRTD). In adults ≥60 years old, vaccine efficacy of candidate for older (RSVPreF3 OA) was 71.7% against RSV-ARI and 82.6% RSV-LRTD (AReSVi-006/NCT04886596). We present the patient-reported outcomes (PROs) same trial at end first RSV season in northern hemisphere (April 2022).

Background— Cardiac hypertrophy is an adaptive response to increased workload that, if unrelieved, leads heart failure. It has been reported that cardiomyocyte apoptosis contributes failure, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment of hypertrophied myocardium increases capillary density improves myocardial perfusion. In this study we hypothesized VEGF reduces thereby preserves contractile function. Methods Results— Newborn rabbits underwent aortic banding. At 4 6 weeks age,...

The clinical ethics literature on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been focused primarily identifying hypothetical ethical dilemmas that may arise with the use of this technology. Little written actual experience ECMO-related questions.

<h3>BACKGROUND:</h3> Patients who continue to smoke after acute coronary syndrome are at increased risk of reinfarction and death. We previously found use varenicline increase abstinence 24 weeks syndrome; here we report results through 52 weeks. <h3>METHODS:</h3> The EVITA trial was a multicentre, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled for smoking cessation in patients admitted hospital with syndrome. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) receive or placebo 12 weeks, conjunction...

Mortality associated with high-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) remains high. Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) allows for acute hemodynamic stabilization and potentially administration of other disease process altering therapies. We sought to compare two eras: pre-ECMO post-ECMO in relation PE treatment mortality. A single-center retrospective chart review was conducted patients. High-risk defined as cardiac arrest or shock. total 60 patients were identified, 31 the era 29 era. Mean...

Introduction Postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in cardiac surgery. Levels of intravascular haemolysis are strongly associated with postoperative AKI and prolonged (&gt;90 min) use cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Ferrous plasma haemoglobin released into the circulation acts as scavenger nitric oxide (NO) produced by endothelial cells. Consequently, vascular bioavailability NO reduced, leading to vasoconstriction impaired renal function. In patients cardiovascular...
