To define better the efficacy of vasodilator therapy in treatment chronic congestive heart failure, we compared effects hydralazine and isosorbide dinitrate with those enalapril 804 men receiving digoxin diuretic for failure. The patients were randomly assigned a double-blind manner to receive 20 mg daily or 300 plus 160 daily. latter regimen was identical that used similar patient population effective-treatment arm our previous Vasodilator–Heart Failure Trial.

The incidence and severity of herpes zoster postherpetic neuralgia increase with age in association a progressive decline cell-mediated immunity to varicella-zoster virus (VZV). We tested the hypothesis that vaccination against VZV would decrease incidence, severity, or both among older adults. We enrolled 38,546 adults 60 years randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial an investigational live attenuated Oka/Merck vaccine ("zoster vaccine"). Herpes was diagnosed according clinical...

Independent risk factors for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) have not been clearly defined in multivariable analyses of large patient populations. To identify that are independently associated with AAA and to determine the prevalence previously unrecognized demographic groups.Cross-sectional screening study.15 Department Veterans Affairs medical centers.73451 veterans who were 50 79 years age had no history AAA.The results ultrasonographic a prescreening questionnaire analyzed using multiple...

BackgroundA double-blind, placebo-controlled trial that involved 38,546 subjects ⩾60 years old demonstrated efficacy of a high-potency live-attenuated Oka/Merck varicella-zoster virus (VZV) vaccine. The included an immunology substudy to determine the relationship VZV-specific immune responses vaccination and clinical outcome MethodsThe enrolled 1395 at 2 sites where blood samples obtained prior vaccination, 6 weeks after 1, 2, 3 thereafter were tested for cell-mediated immunity (VZV-CMI) by...

Elective endovascular repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm results in lower perioperative mortality than traditional open repair, but after 4 years this survival advantage is not seen; addition, two European trials have shown worse long-term outcomes with repair. Long-term a study we conducted more decade ago to compare are unknown. We randomly assigned patients asymptomatic aneurysms either or the aneurysm. All were candidates for procedure. Patients followed up 14 years.A total 881...

Background. The Shingles Prevention Study (SPS; Department of Veterans Affairs Cooperative 403) demonstrated that zoster vaccine was efficacious through 4 years after vaccination. Short-Term Persistence Substudy (STPS) initiated the SPS to further assess persistence efficacy.

A new, numerically minute population of cells representing the earliest T precursor in adult mouse thymus has recently been isolated. This shown to be similar bone marrow hemopoietic stem surface antigenic phenotype and express moderate levels CD4. We now show, by fluorescence-activated cell sorting intrathymic transfer irradiated mice, that this apparently homogeneous differs from multipotent expressing antigen 2 (Sca-2), it most early B lineage lacking B220 class II major...

Implantable transvenous cardioverter-defibrillators offer a significant opportunity to decrease procedural morbidity and medical costs in the care of patients with life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias who otherwise would have required sternotomy or thoracotomy for device insertion. The purpose this study was examine prospectively safety, efficacy, limitations associated use transvenously implanted, tiered-therapy cardioverter-defibrillator antitachycardia pacing function consecutive...

BACKGROUND Transvenous implantable cardioverter-defibrillators provide significant advantages in the treatment of patients with life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. However, present technology requires considerable electrophysiology expertise, multiple incisions, and long operative times for successful implementation. METHODS AND RESULTS In this study, we a prototype new, easy-to-insert unipolar transvenous defibrillation system that has reliability epicardial but ease pacemaker...
