Background Lipid metabolism and particularly high-density lipoprotein (HDL) may be involved in the pathogenic mechanism of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, conflicting results have been reported associations AMD with plasma HDL other lipids, which confounded by recently HDL-related genes. We explored association lipid levels lipid-lowering medication use, taking into account most genes associated AMD. Methods The Alienor study is a population-based on eye diseases performed...

Abstract. Purpose: To describe dry eye disease in French elderly subjects. Methods: The Alienor Study is a population‐based study on age‐related 963 residents of Bordeaux (France), aged 73 years or more. Self‐reported and use artificial tears were documented through face‐to‐face interview. Dry symptoms assessed using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire tear film stability by break‐up time measurements (TBUT). Definite was defined as self‐reported eye, confirmed and/or OSDI...

Worldwide, degenerative eye diseases (age-related maculopathy (ARM), cataract, glaucoma) are the main causes of visual impairment and blindness, which contribute to disability in elderly. Mainly three types nutritional factors investigated for their potential protection against ageing: antioxidants; lutein zeaxanthin (carotenoids accumulate specifically eye); omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Few epidemiological studies have been conducted this field, particularly Europe.
