Abstract Background Compliance mismatch between native artery and prosthetic graft used for infrainguinal bypass is implicated in the aetiology of failure. The aim was to quantify elastic properties a new compliant poly(carbonate)polyurethane (CPU) vascular graft, compare compliance grafts made from CPU, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), Dacron human saphenous vein with that muscular artery. Methods A pulsatile flow phantom perfuse vessel segments at physiological pulse pressure...

PURPOSE Increased automation has been identified as one approach to improving global cancer care. The Radiation Planning Assistant (RPA) is a web-based tool offering automated radiotherapy (RT) contouring and planning low-resource clinics. In this study, the RPA workflow clinical acceptability were assessed by physicians around world. METHODS output for 75 cases was reviewed at least three physicians; 31 radiation oncologists 16 institutions in six countries on five continents contours plans...

The effect of the iron chelator, desferrioxamine, on transferrin binding, growth rates and cell cycle was investigated in human leukaemic line, K562. At all concentrations chelator (2-50 microM) binding 125I-transferrin increased by 24 h reached a maximum at 72-96 h. Maximum (6-8-fold increased) occurred cells treated with 20 microM-desferrioxamine, contrast control which, 96 h, showed 50% decrease over initial binding. Scatchard analysis 4 degrees C that this due to an increase number...

Polyurethanes have unique mechanical and biologic properties that make them ideal for many implantable devices. However, certain polyurethanes are affected by some in vivo degradation mechanisms. For example, poly(ester)urethanes subject to hydrolytic no longer used long-term implanted Poly(ether)urethanes while hydrolytically stable, oxidative several forms, including environmental stress cracking metal ion oxidation. We developed a second-generation poly(carbonate)urethane with superior...

Whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) is the standard non-surgical treatment for metastatic disease, but rarely eradicates bulky metastases from most common cancers. Recent literature has demonstrated safety and efficacy of delivering very high focal doses radiation (by radiosurgical techniques) to gross tumour volume metastases, thereby obtaining more certain local control than achieved by WBRT. In this paper we report a study 11 patients with in whom an intensity-modulated therapy (IMRT)...

This paper describes the case of an industrial radiographer who was seriously overexposed to gamma radiation. The exact circumstances this exposure were not established but it concluded that he repeatedly irradiated probably a total average whole body dose at least 10 Gy over several years. Also, much larger hand required its partial amputation. He developed myelodysplasia, which progressed acute myeloid leukaemia from died. Karyotypic examination leukaemic blasts showed changes very similar...

A 50-year-old woman ASA 2 underwent carbon dioxide hysteroscopy under general anaesthesia. Monitoring showed a sudden and rapid fall in end-tidal followed by oxygen desaturation. She became pulseless cyanosed. Resuscitation with oxygen, intravenous adrenaline head-down tilt restored her to haemodynamic stability. Hyperbaric therapy was also administered as air embolism could not be excluded.
