ABSTRACT The present update on the global distribution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex spoligotypes provides both octal and binary descriptions for M. complex, including bovis , from >90 countries (13,008 patterns grouped into 813 shared types containing 11,708 isolates 1,300 orphan patterns). A number potential indices were developed to summarize information biogeographical specificity a given type, as well its geographical spreading (matching code index, respectively). To...
Abstract We present a short summary of recent observations on the global distribution major clades Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, causative agent tuberculosis. This was defined by data-mining an international spoligotyping database, SpolDB3. database contains 11,708 patterns from as many clinical isolates originating more than 90 countries. The spoligotypes were clustered into 813 shared types. A total 1,300 orphan (clinical showing unique spoligotype) also detected.
BackgroundChildren in rural areas experience the interrelated problems of poor growth, anemia and parasitic infections. We investigated prevalence associations between intestinal helminth protozoan infections, malnutrition school-age Venezuelan children. MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted 390 children aged 4-16 years from three Venezuela: Amazon Region, Orinoco Delta Carabobo State. Stool samples were collected for direct examinations. Anthropometric indicators chronic...
ABSTRACT Effective and economical mycobactericidal disinfectants are needed to kill both Mycobacterium tuberculosis non- M. mycobacteria. We found that acetic acid (vinegar) efficiently kills after 30 min of exposure a 6% solution. The activity is not due pH alone, propionic also appears be bactericidal. bolletii massiliense nontuberculous mycobacteria were more resistant, although 30-min 10% resulted in at least 6-log 10 reduction viable bacteria. Acetic an effective disinfectant should...
BackgroundStudies of T-cell immune responses against SARS-CoV-2 are important in understanding the status individuals or populations. Here, we use a simple, cheap, and rapid whole blood stimulation assay - an Interferon-Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) to study immunity convalescent COVID-19 patients unexposed healthy contacts from Quito, Ecuador.MethodsInterferon-gamma (INF-γ) production was measured heparinized subjects after for 24 h with Spike S1 protein, Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) protein...
Four isolates of a rapidly growing Mycobacterium species had mycolic acid pattern similar to that smegmatis, as determined by HPLC analyses. Three the were from footbath drains and sink at nail salon located in Atlanta, GA, USA; fourth was obtained granulomatous subdermal lesion female patient Venezuela who undergoing mesotherapy. By random amplified polymorphic DNA electrophoresis PFGE large restriction fragments, three shown be same strain but different Venezuela. Polymorphisms regions...
Abstract Background Tuberculosis (TB) continues to cause a high toll of disease and death among children worldwide. The diagnosis childhood TB is challenged by the paucibacillary nature difficulties in obtaining specimens. Whereas scientific clinical research efforts develop novel diagnostic tools have focused on adults, has been relatively neglected. Blood transcriptional profiling improved our understanding pathogenesis adult may offer future leads for treatment. No studies applying gene...
We evaluated the immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibody response against nucleocapsid protein (NP) and receptor-binding domain (RBD) of spike SARS-CoV-2 in a cohort 86 individuals Venezuela, before after receiving Sputnik V vaccine.
Colistin is an antibiotic of last resort for treating serious Gram-negative bacterial infections. However, the misuse colistin, especially as animal growth promoter, has contributed to increasing antimicrobial resistance, mediated mainly through plasmid transfer mcr-1 gene. This study assessed prevalence phenotypic and molecular colistin resistance in Escherichia coli Klebsiella pneumoniae Ecuador healthy humans their chickens pigs.Fecal samples were collected from pigs two rural coastal...
Few studies have addressed drug resistance of Enterobacterales in rural communities developing countries. This study aimed to determine the coexistence extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and carbapenemase genes Escherichia coli Klebsiella pneumoniae strains carrying mcr-1 gene Ecuador from healthy humans their backyard animals. Sixty-two strains, thirty E. thirty-two K. were selected a previous study. PCR performed for presence ESBLs genes. The further characterized, genetic relationship...
Abstract Background Tuberculosis remains an endemic public health problem, but the ecology of TB strains prevalent, and their transmission, can vary by country region. We sought to investigate prevalence Mycobacterium tuberculosis in different regions Venezuela. A previous study identified most prevalent Venezuela did not show geographical distribution nor identify clonal genotypes. To better understand local strain ecology, we used spoligotyping analyze 1298 M. isolated from 1997 2006,...
ABSTRACT We tested a new method for detecting drug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis that uses TM4 mycobacteriophage phAE87:: hsp60-EGFP ( EGFP -phage) engineered to contain the gene encoding enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP). After promising results in preliminary studies, -phage was used detect isoniazid (INH), rifampin (RIF), and streptomycin (STR) resistance 155 M. , were compared resazurin microplate technique, with proportion serving as reference standard. The...
Acceptance of childhood vaccination varies between societies, affecting worldwide coverage. Low coverage rates are common in indigenous populations where parents often choose not to vaccinate their children. We aimed gain insight into reasons for vaccine acceptance or rejection among Warao Amerindians Venezuela.Based on records refusal, in-depth interviews with 20 vaccine-accepting and 11 vaccine-declining caregivers were performed. Parents' attitudes explored using a qualitative...
Background: Q fever is an underreported zoonotic disease of cattle and men in most countries the world. Very little information about prevalence Coxiella burnetii infection animals humans comes from South Central America systematic studies are lacking. Methods: A seroprevalence survey for amongst cattle, farm workers students was conducted Ecuador using a commercial ELISA kit. Results: Survey results showed unexpectedly high antibodies dairy (43%) (34%). In addition, clinical case human...
Determining the infectious cause of abortion in cattle is difficult. This case-control study was set up to investigate causes by determining seroprevalence three reproductive pathogens dairy Ecuador and their association with abortion: Brucella abortus, Neospora caninum Coxiella burnetii. Ninety-five blood samples were obtained from cows that had experienced a mid- or late gestation first calf seventy-seven control group same age did not experience problems. No antibodies detected for B....
Abstract Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant public health problem in Ecuador with an incidence of 43 per 100,000 inhabitants and estimated multidrug-resistant-TB prevalence all TB cases 9%. Genotyping Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTBC) important to understand regional transmission dynamics. This study aims describe the main MTBC lineages sublineages circulating country. A representative sample 373 strains from 22 provinces Ecuador, data comprising geographic origin drug susceptibility, were...
