Gestational syphilis is a prevalent disease in Brazil and other low medium income countries. Desensitization to penicillin recommended for pregnant women with who are allergic β-lactams. This descriptive study utilizing outpatient medical records from 2011 2015 mother child hospital that part of the national healthcare system South Brazil, which performs an average 3,600 birth assistances per year. All cases presumptive diagnosis β-lactam allergy during period were included. The patients...
Gonorrhoea and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Neisseria gonorrhoeae are major public health concerns globally. Enhanced AMR surveillance for gonococci is essential worldwide; however, recent quality-assured gonococcal Latin America, including Brazil, has been limited. Our aims were to (i) establish the first nationwide surveillance, quality assured according WHO standards, (ii) describe susceptibility of clinical isolates collected from 2015 2016 all five main regions (seven sentinel...
Neisseria gonorrhoeae antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance is imperative internationally, but only eight (22.9%) countries in the WHO Region of Americas reported complete AMR data to Global Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Program (WHO GASP) 2016. Genomic studies are ideal for enhanced understanding gonococcal populations, including spread strains. To elucidate circulating lineages/sublineages, their determinants, and baseline genomic diversity among strains Brazil, we conducted...
Genital ulcers (GUs) represent a diagnostic challenge and can be secondary to neoplastic inflammatory processes of different causes. Among those infectious etiology, there are sexually transmitted infections (STIs), very frequent reason for seeking the health service. The most common agents herpes simplex virus Treponema pallidum and, more rarely, Haemophilus ducreyi, Klebsiella granulomatis Chlamydia trachomatis. A careful dermatological examination offers important elements; however,...
To (i) describe the nationwide antimicrobial susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) isolates cultured across Brazil in 2018-20 and compare it with NG resistance data from 2015-16, (ii) present epidemiological corresponding gonorrhoea patients 2018-20.Twelve representative sentinel sites men urethral discharge. Susceptibility to eight antimicrobials was examined using agar dilution method, according WHO standards. The consenting participants were invited provide data.In total, 633 (one...
Congenital syphilis (CS) is a preventable epidemic disease for which control hindered by socioeconomic and health system issues. Inadequately treated maternal (MaS) commonly has serious adverse obstetric outcomes. This study - cross-sectional in Brazilian large urban public Mother Child hospital, making use of secondary data evaluated the occurrence treatment sexual partners (SP) among women with MaS. The results showed that 771 MaS cases were identified from 2007 to 2014. No information on...
To analyze effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on consumption personal protective equipment and products (PPEP), as well frequency surgical site infection (SSI) among non-COVID-19 patients submitted to cesarean sections. A retrospective study was conducted in a maternity unity public teaching hospital which not part reference service for treatment. It compared PPEP occurrence SSI after sections monthly periods before first case Porto Alegre, state Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Personal measured...
STDs are a significant public health problem in Brazil. A primary control strategy is the immediate treatment of symptomatic individuals. When services unavailable, STD patients seek care alternative settings. Probably most frequently used settings commercial pharmacies, where pharmacy clerks provide treatment, although Brazilian law prohibits selling antibiotics without prescription. Our objective was to evaluate prescribing practices by for STDs. We performed cross-sectional study. Trained...
Infections that cause genital ulcers are one of the themes comprising Clinical Protocol and Therapeutic Guidelines for Comprehensive Care People with Sexually Transmitted Infections, published by Brazilian Ministry Health in 2020. The have been developed based on scientific evidence validated discussions specialists. This article addresses clinical ulcer syndrome caused sexually transmitted infections its most common etiological agents: Treponema pallidum (syphilis), herpes simplex virus-2...
Abstract Objectives Regular quality-assured WGS with antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and epidemiological data of patients is imperative to elucidate the shifting gonorrhoea epidemiology, nationally internationally. We describe dynamics gonococcal population in 11 cities Brazil between 2017 2020 emerging disappearing lineages associated AMR, compare Brazilian AMR from 2015 2016, explain recent changes epidemiology. Methods was performed using Illumina NextSeq 550 genomes 623 isolates were used...
Introduction: Congenital syphilis (CS) has severe adverse outcomes, including abortion and death. Diagnosis of CS in asymptomatic newborns remains difficult. This study aims to evaluate an in-house polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) blood samples (BS) identify T. pallidum DNA newborns. Methodology: We performed exploratory cross-sectional that included exposed during pregnancy (SEG) non-exposed (SNEG) newborns, between 2019 2020. In-house conventional PCR for...
The genetic diversity of 89 clinical Legionella isolates, collected between 1987 and 2012, in 22 hospitals from the five regions Portugal, was analysed this study using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) Dresden panel sequence-based typing (SBT) protocol. eBURST algorithm used to infer levels relatedness isolates. All isolates were pneumophila, which further characterised into four subgroups by MAbs, 30 sequence types (STs) SBT. Twelve STs unique Portugal; one them (ST100) represented 32...

We present a case of penile lesion with clinical appearance similar to Mondor disease (thrombosis the dorsal vein penis) or sclerosing lymphangitis. Laboratory evaluation, however, showed solid lesion, no vascular component Doppler ultrasonography and treponema immunohistochemistry. Histological serological tests were compatible secondary syphilis. The authors reinforce need for inclusion syphilis in differential diagnosis cord injuries.
Introduction: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the Treponema pallidum and has become epidemic in past two decades. The disease often asymptomatic, its manifestations are diverse. It may affect multiple systems, posing risk of serious consequences or even death. Objective: To present case an exuberant syphilis-related lesion elderly man. Case report: An 85-year-old man presented with painless penile lesion. He reported having had oral sexual contact (felatio)...
Objective: Considering the lack of data on T. pallidum genotyping in Brazil, we aimed to study its strains and their resistance macrolides genital ulcers suggestive syphilis. Methods: Men with syphilis were invited participate. Samples collected a dry cotton swab immersed 0.9% NaCl solution. Detection was done by PCR amplification 260 bp tpp47 gene. The product analyzed electrophoresis 2% agarose gel containing 0.05% ethidium bromide. Positive samples MLST (sequencing chromosomal loci TP0136,...
