The effects of malaria and its treatment in the first trimester pregnancy remain an area concern. We aimed to assess outcome malaria-exposed malaria-unexposed first-trimester pregnancies women from Thai-Burmese border compare outcomes after chloroquine-based, quinine-based, or artemisinin-based treatments. We analysed all antenatal records attending Shoklo Malaria Research Unit clinics May 12, 1986, Oct 31, 2010. Women without were compared with those who had a single episode trimester....

Background The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit has been working on the Thai–Myanmar border for 25 y providing early diagnosis and treatment (EDT) of malaria. Transmission Plasmodium falciparum declined, but resistance to artesunate emerged. We expanded malaria activities through EDT evaluated impact over a 12-y period. Methods Findings Between 1 October 1999 30 September 2011, increased number cross-border (Myanmar side) health facilities from two 11 recorded consultations. Changes in incidence...

Introduction Maternal mortality is high in developing countries, but there are few data high-risk groups such as migrants and refugees malaria-endemic areas. Trends maternal were followed over 25 years antenatal clinics prospectively established an area with low seasonal transmission on the north-western border of Thailand. Methods Findings All medical records from women who attended Shoklo Malaria Research Unit 12th May 1986 to 31st December 2010 reviewed, death analyzed for causality....

Abstract Objectives Ultrasound examination of the fetus is a powerful tool for assessing gestational age and detecting obstetric problems but rarely available in developing countries. The aim this study was to assess intraobserver interobserver agreement fetal biometry by locally trained health workers refugee camp on Thai–Burmese border. Methods One expatriate doctor four local participated study, which included examinations performed every fifth pregnant woman with singleton pregnancy...

There conflicting evidence on harm benefits of intestinal geohelminth infections incidence severity malaria, consequently risks deworming malaria affected populations. Chloroquine (CQ) resistant vivax malaria is spreading. In this case, Plasmodium infections during pregnancy and in the postpartum period were not satisfactorily cleared by CQ, despite adequate drug concentrations. A growth restricted infant was delivered. Poor susceptibility to CQ confirmed in-vitro molecular genotyping strongly suggestive of true recrudescence P. vivax. This first clinically laboratory case two high-grade parasite strains from Thailand.

The association between malaria during pregnancy and low birth weight (LBW) is well described. This manuscript aims to quantify the relative contribution of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants preterm (PTB) in pregnancies accurately dated by ultrasound on Thai-Myanmar border at Shoklo Malaria Research Unit. From 2001 2010 a population cohort prospectively followed pregnancies, we analyzed all singleton newborns who were live born, normal, weighed first hour life with gestational age (GA)...

Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DHA-PPQ) is a promising new artemisinin combination treatment. There are no published data on the intentional use of drug in pregnancy. Between June 2006 and January 2007, 50 Karen pregnant women with recurrent P. falciparum infections, despite 7-day treatments quinine or artesunate (+/−clindamycin) both, were treated DHA-PPQ.
