We hypothesized that slime may mask bacterial molecules important in the attachment of Staphylococcus epidermidis to inanimate surfaces. In support this hypothesis, we found slime-negative strains attached significantly better fibrinogen or fibronectin than parent and exhibited greater surface hydrophobicity.
