The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak is rapidly progressing globally, and Italy, as one of the main pandemic hotspots, may provide some hard lessons for other countries. In this paper, we summarize current organizational capacity a pragmatic narrative account strategies activities implemented by Department Prevention (Dipartimento di Prevenzione)—the regional entity Local Health Authority Italian National Service in charge public health—since beginning outbreak. We conduct preliminary...

Globally, breast cancer is the most diagnosed invasive among women. Current therapies (e.g., chemotherapy) show numerous limitations due to lack of selectivity and involved side effects, which urgently asks for novel approaches with enhanced tumor-killing efficacy. We previously demonstrated that MXenes, new bioactive nanomaterials promising photophysical properties, are capable increase efficiency targeted photothermal therapy (PTT). In this work, we investigated effect few- multi-layer...

Between August and September 2023, three distinct autochthonous dengue virus transmission events occurred in Lazio, Italy, with the main event Rome. The involved different serotypes. No link previous imported cases was identified. Here we describe epidemiological phylogenetic analysis of first implemented control actions. multiple call for a strengthening vector strategies future research to better characterise risk countries like Italy.

Protontherapy is a rapidly expanding radiotherapy modality where accelerated proton beams are used to precisely deliver the dose tumor target but generally considered ineffective against radioresistant tumors. Proton-Boron Capture Therapy (PBCT) novel approach aimed at enhancing biological effectiveness. PBCT exploits nuclear fusion reaction between low-energy protons and 11 B atoms, i.e. p+ B→ 3α (p-B), which supposed produce highly-DNA damaging α-particles exclusively across...

We report a case of Legionella pneumonia in dishwasher restaurant Rome, Italy, just after the end lockdown that was place to control SARS-CoV-2 epidemic. The highlights importance strict monitoring water and air systems immediately before reopening business or public sector buildings, need consider infections among differential diagnosis respiratory due ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Historically, several classification systems have been used for brachytherapy, and they were based on the type of clinical purpose, implant timing implant, dose-rate, loading treatment delivery. However, over last decades, there some major technological advancements, including introduction image-guidance possibility to modulate dose delivered, which led authors (in order highlight differences between old technique new approach) label it in a different way by replacing "brachytherapy" with...

Cancer spheroids are in vitro 3D models that became crucial nanomaterials science thanks to the possibility of performing high throughput screening nanoparticles and combined nanoparticle-drug therapies on models. However, most current spheroid analysis methods involve manual steps. This is a time-consuming process extremely liable variability individual operators. For this reason, rapid, user-friendly, ready-to-use, high-throughput image software necessary. In work, we report INSIDIA 2.0...

Interventional radiotherapy (IRT, brachytherapy) is a highly effective treatment method for non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Traditionally, the maximum depth of NMSC lesions considered eligible contact IRT was 5 mm; however, following several national surveys and recent recommendations, such cut-off, thicker than mm may be treated by IRT. The use image guidance in defining actual treating to correctly identify clinical target volume (CTV) prevent unnecessary toxicity paramount importance....

Objective To better define the immunopathogenesis of COVID-19, present study aims to characterize early immune responses SARS-CoV-2 infection in household contacts COVID-19 cases. In particular, innate, T- and B-cell specific were evaluated over time. Methods Household cases screened for SARS−CoV−2 by nasopharyngeal swab surveillance purposes enrolled (T0, n=42). Of these, 28 subjects returned a follow-up test (T1). The innate response was assessed detecting panel soluble factors...

Interventional radiotherapy (brachytherapy) has become the new therapeutic standard in management of early stages nasal vestibule tumors; fact it allows for high local control rates and low toxicity profiles. However, since more patients will receive interventional as primary treatment, is desirable to implement novel strategies reduce dose organs at risk with future aim result further lowering long-term side effects. We were able identify two different treatment volume, including...

We report preventive measures adopted after tuberculosis (TB) transmission from a nurse to newborn assessed in late July 2011. All exposed neonates born between January and 2011 were clinically evaluated tested by QuantiFERON TB gold in-tube; newborns testing positive referred for prophylaxis. Of 1,340 newborns, 118 (9%) no other active cases of found. Active surveillance will be continued over the next three years all those exposed.

Graphene oxide (GO), a carbon-based nanomaterial, presents significant potential across biomedical fields such as bioimaging, drug delivery, biosensors, and phototherapy. This study examines the effects of integrating GO into poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) scaffolds on human immune cell function. Our results demonstrate that high concentrations reduce viability peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) following stimulation with anti-CD3 antibody. reduction extends to T lymphocyte...
