Using a new bunched-beam technique in the GSI heavy-ion experimental storage ring (ESR), we performed precision laser spectroscopy on relativistic heavy ions hitherto inaccessible infrared optical region. We determined wavelength of $M1$ transition between $F\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1$ $(\ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\approx}50\mathrm{ms})$ and $F\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$ hyperfine states $1s$ ground state hydrogenlike...

We observed the bound-state ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ decay of fully ionized ${}^{187}$Re nuclei circulating in a storage ring. With two independent methods time dependent growth hydrogenlike ${}^{187}$Os ions has been measured and half-life $32.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.0\mathrm{yr}$ for bare could be determined, to compared with 42 Gyr neutral atoms. resulting $\mathrm{log}\mathrm{ft}$ value $7.87\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03$ any ionization state can calculated. Thus...

Abstract Quantum electrodynamics (QED), the quantum field theory that describes interaction between light and matter, is commonly regarded as best-tested in modern physics. However, this claim mostly based on extremely precise studies performed domain of relatively low strengths atoms ions 1–6 . In realm very strong electromagnetic fields such heaviest highly charged (with nuclear charge Z ≫ 1), QED calculations enter a qualitatively different, non-perturbative regime. Yet, corresponding...

The probabilities for γ-ray and particle emission as a function of the excitation energy decaying nucleus are valuable observables constraining ingredients models that describe deexcitation nuclei near threshold. We report the application of new elimination Rutherford elastic scattering technique for measurement proton-induced reaction cross sections utilizing stored ions decelerated to astrophysical energies. This approach results in a background reduction factor about 1 order magnitude, enabling first (p, n) section storage ring. Here, channels ^{124}Xe(p,n) and ^{124}Xe(p,γ) have been studied just above neutron threshold energy. The data provide valuable constraints Hauser-Feshbach theory...

We present direct mass measurements of the short-lived 44V, 48Mn, 41Ti and 45Cr nuclei. A novel experimental method has been used that is based on projectile fragmentation, in-flight separation relativistic heavy ions with fragment separator (FRS), isochronous operation storage ring (ESR). resolving power 110 000 (FWHM) an accuracy about (100–500) keV achieved. The impact results rp-process in X-ray burst models discussed.

A study of cooled $^{197}\mathrm{Au}$ projectile-fragmentation products has been performed with a storage ring. This enabled metastable nuclear excitations energies up to 3 MeV, and half-lives extending minutes or longer, be identified in the neutron-rich nuclides $^{183,184,186}\mathrm{Hf}$ $^{186,187}\mathrm{Ta}$. The results support prediction strongly favored isomer region near neutron number 116.
