Significance Macrolichens are considered to be well known, including the tropical montane basidiolichen fungus Dictyonema glabratum , also known as Cora pavonia an important component of threatened paramo ecosystems, where it acts a biological fertilizer due its ability fix atmospheric nitrogen. This lichen was long believed represent single species, but after revising this number 16 in two genera ( and Corella ), here we show that at least 126 phylogenetically morphologically distinct...

As part of a larger systematic and taxonomic revision the genus Sticta in northern Andes, several species were discovered forming green algal cyanobacterial photosymbiodemes, seven which are new to science described here—S. lobarioides Moncada & Coca, S. macrothallina neopulmonarioides phyllidiokunthii Lücking, pseudolobaria pulmonarioides tatamana Coca. All discussed illustrated, key with Lobaria pulmonaria gross morphology is given.

We provide a phylogenetic revision of the Pseudocyphellaria crocata complex in Americas. Specimens traditionally identified as P. crocata, based on their cyanobacterial photobiont, yellow pseudocyphellae, at least partially white medulla, and soralia or soralia-like structures, are shown to represent 13 distinct species, forming monophyletic group divided into four large clades, three comprising one species each containing eight plus two taxa for which no molecular data available. Seven...

Abstract As part of a phylogenetic and taxonomic revision the lichenized genus Sticta in Colombia, six new species with apotheciate thalli but lacking vegetative propagules are described: atroandensis Moncada & Lücking sp. nov., S. brevior lumbschiana macrocyphellata Coca parahumboldtii pseudohumboldtii nov. A new species of passion flower from the Cordillera Central Colombian Andes is here described; Passiflora kumandayi M.A. Buitrago A. & Coca (subgenus Decaloba, supersection Auriculata). This species, along with five other closely related Andean comprise a monophyletic group characterized by paired branched inflorescences and small flowers short or absent androgynophores. provisional key to in newly described section Apodae presented. illustrated its affinities are discussed based on...

Nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region is well-established as universal DNA barcode marker for Fungi. Here we examined the utility of barcoding delimiting species in lichenized Basidiomycota from Colombia, focusing on genus Sulzbacheromyces (Lepidostromatales). The topology best-scoring maximum likelihood tree based ITS data shows eight separate, well-supported lineages within Sulzbacheromyces, including six already known S. caatingae Brazil, miomboensis De Kesel & Ertz...

We describe and illustrate Zamia imbricata Z. sinuensis, two new species (Zamiaceae, Cycadales) from the Magdalena-Urabá moist forests ecoregion of northern Colombia. The appear to belong manicata clade, an assemblage strongly supported by recent molecular phylogenetic analyses which shares a set morphological characters such as hypogeous semi-hypogeous stems, distinctly toothed leaflets, long peduncles, megasporophylls with relatively flat shields, diminutive pollen cones containing...

Coccocarpia Pers. currently comprises 28 mostly broadly distributed tropical species of fungi lichenized with cyanobacteria. Three these taxa, C. erythroxyli, palmicola, and pellita, are presumably pantropical to subcosmopolitan, broad morphological variation across their range. This study aimed at presenting a first global phylogeny the genus, test current concepts inferred distribution patterns, based on samples from Colombia, Puerto Rico, Gabon, Kenya, Thailand, Fiji, Hawaii. We also...
