Hydrogen (H2) has powered microbial metabolism for roughly 4 billion years. The recent discovery that it also fuels geochemical analogs of the most ancient biological carbon fixation pathway sheds light on origin metabolism. However, remains unclear whether H2 can sustain more complex nonenzymatic reaction networks. Here, we show drives reductive amination six ketoacids and glyoxylate to give corresponding amino acids in good yields using ammonium concentrations ranging from 6 150 mM....

Several classes of biological reactions that are mediated by an enzyme and a co-factor can occur, to slower extent, not only without the but even co-factor, under catalysis metal ions. This observation has led proposal metabolic pathways progressively evolved from using inorganic catalysts organocatalysts increasing complexity. Transamination, process which ammonia is transferred between amino acids α-keto acids, mechanism been well studied enzyme/co-factor catalysis, ion-catalyzed variant...

Metabolic theories for the origin of life posit that inorganic catalysts enabled self-organized chemical precursors to pathways metabolism, including those make genetic molecules. Recently, experiments showing nonenzymatic versions a number core metabolic have started support this idea. However, experimental demonstrations reaction sequences along de novo ribonucleotide biosynthesis are limited. Here we show all three reactions pyrimidine nucleobase convert aspartate orotate proceed at 60 °C...

This paper investigates the role of phenolic compounds in biochar's adsorption capacity toward volatile organic (VOCs) emitted from asphalt. Considering impact preparation technique on composition, our findings show that biochar produced through fixed-bed contained more functional groups than fluidized-bed technique. Specifically, Fourier transform infrared analysis showed a higher concentration OH biochar, consistent with its nearly 3-fold oxygen content (6.37 ± 0.52 wt %) compared to (2.36...

Oxidation of anthranilamides, salicylamides and some β-substituted amides with iodobenzene diacetate in methanolic potassium hydroxide led to a new convenient synthesis 2-benzimidazolones, 2-benzoxazolones related compounds, respectively. The reaction probably occurs via initial Hofmann-type rearrangement followed by intramolecular cyclization intermediate isocyanate.

Asphalt is used globally in construction for roads, pavements, and buildings; however, as a fossil-derived material, it known to generate volatile organic compounds (VOCs) upon exposure heat light that can be harmful human health. Several heterogeneous strategies have been reported the inhibition of these VOCs; direct use inexpensive, accessible Earth-Abundant metals has not extensively explored.
