Microplastics are recognised as a ubiquitous and hazardous pollutant worldwide. These small-sized particles have been detected in human faeces collected from number of cities, providing evidence ingestion microplastics their presence the gastrointestinal tract. Here, using Raman spectroscopy, we identified an average 50 g−1 (20.4–138.9 wet weight) healthy cohort Hong Kong. This quantity was about five times higher than values reported other places Asia Europe. Polystyrene most abundant...

Neuropsychiatric disorders have been one of the worldwide health problems contributing to profound social and economic consequences. It is reported that consumption an excessive high-fat diet (HFD) in middle age could induce cognitive emotional dysfunctions, whereas mechanisms effects long-term HFD intake on brain not fully investigated. We propose a hypothesis prolonged throughout adulthood lead neurobehavioral deterioration via gut-brain axis. In this study, adult C57BL/6J mice consuming...

Ribosome inactivating proteins (RIPs) like ricin, pokeweed antiviral protein (PAP) and Shiga-like toxins 1 2 (Stx1 Stx2) share the same substrate, alpha-sarcin/ricin loop, but differ in their specificities towards prokaryotic eukaryotic ribosomes. Ricin depurinates ribosomes more efficiently than ribosomes, while PAP can depurinate both types of Accumulating evidence suggests that different docking sites on ribosome might be used by RIPs, providing a basis for understanding mechanism...

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is commonly resistant to ampicillin, yet the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are not clear. In study, a novel class A carbenicillin-hydrolyzing β-lactamase (CARB) family of β-lactamases, bla(CARB-17), was identified and found be responsible for intrinsic penicillin resistance in V. parahaemolyticus. Importantly, bla(CARB-17)-like genes were present all 293 genome sequences available GenBank detectable 91 food isolates, further confirming nature gene.

Ricin is a ribosome inactivating protein that catalytically removes universally conserved adenine from the alpha-sarcin/ricin loop (SRL) of 28S rRNA. We recently showed ricin A chain (RTA) interacts with P1 and P2 proteins ribosomal stalk to depurinate SRL in yeast. Here we examined interaction RTA wild-type mutant yeast ribosomes deleted by surface plasmon resonance. The between did not follow single-step binding model but was best characterized two distinct types interactions. AB1 had very...
