A new troglobitic species of the previously monotypic genus Biokoviella Mršić, 1992, B. mosorensis Antić & Dražina sp. nov., is described from caves on Mt. Mosor, Croatia. In addition to this, mauriesi partially re-described, and taxonomic status family Biokoviellidae re-considered. The placed in subfamily Biokoviellinae 1992 stat. nov. within Anthogonidae Ribaut, 1913. relationship with other anthogonids briefly discussed, a distribution map presented. Notes ecology coinhabitants...
A review of the genus Typhloiulus Latzel, 1884 (Julida: Julidae) in Dinaric region is given. Previously published and new faunistic records are provided for each species, together with notes some them. Four species described: T. clavatus sp. nov., gracilis opisthonodus parvulus all from caves Dalmatia Herzegovina. In addition, we provide first description male insularis Strasser, 1938. Some taxonomic relationships among biogeographical aspects (with distribution maps) discussed.
The objective of this study was to examine the cross-cultural differences PANSS across six geo-cultural regions. specific aims are (1) measurement properties PANSS; and (2) how each 30 items function regions.Data obtained for 1,169 raters from 6 different regions: Eastern Asia (n = 202), India 185), Northern Europe 126), Russia & Ukraine 197), Southern 162), United States 297). A principle components analysis assessed unidimensionality subscales. Rasch rating scale examined among item...
Branchipus schaefferi Fischer, 1834, is a common and one of the most abundant large branchiopods widely distributed in Europe. In this work, for first time, we describe classify some frequently observed morphological anomalies species. These are deformities head structures as well cercopods. Possible causes such anomalities discussed detail.
Abstract Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) in Drosophila melanogaster represent the basis of chemical communication being involved many important biological functions. The aim this study was to characterize composition and variation cuticular profiles five D. strains. These strains were reared for approximately 300 generations on diets: standard cornmeal medium substrates prepared with apple, banana, tomato, carrot. Differences quantity and/or quality CHCs assumed as a result activation...
Abstract Millipedes of the order Glomerida are known to produce quinazolinone alkaloids as defensive substances. However, chemical data rather scarce and all hitherto available publications refer a single glomeridan family, Glomeridae. To contribute knowledge ecology glomeridans, we collected species, Typhloglomeris coeca Verhoeff, 1898 T. varunae Makarov, Lučić, Tomić & Karaman, 2003, from second family – Glomeridellidae. The exudates were extracted in methylene chloride analyzed by gas...
Cave animals live under highly constant ecological conditions and in permanent darkness, many evolutionary adaptations of cave-dwellers have been triggered by their specific environment. A similar "cave effect" leading to pronounced chemical interactions such may be assumed, but the chemoecology troglobionts is mostly unknown. We investigated defensive chemistry a largely cave-dwelling julid group, controversial tribe "Typhloiulini", we included some endogean representatives. While defense...
Young people growing up in war zones experience significant changes of their physical and social environments caused by urban destruction. Employing the methodology narrative inquiry, this work theoretically explores environmental spatial affordances enabling sociocognitive development among young during 4-year military siege Sarajevo. The theoretical analysis focuses on two contexts - school Sarajevo tunnel examines how environments, symbolically enacted language, scaffold developmental...
Praon spinosum Mackauer, 1959 reared from Thrzpsaphis verrucosa Gillette,1917 on Carex nigra and Diaeretellus macrocarpus 1961 the conspecific aphid rostrata association Mt. Durmitor Biosphere Reserve in Serbia Montenegro are redescribed, diagnosed illustrated with photographs SEM line drawings. The taxonomic position of P. within genus is discussed. Furthermore, some rare endemic — aphid-parasitoid associations high-montane areas southeastern Europe reviewed their distribution origin
The troglomorphic millipede Brachydesmus troglobius Daday, 1889 (Polydesmida: Polydesmidae) secretes allomones from glands on both lateral surfaces of its body segments. secretion was identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis with electron and chemical ionization, shown to be composed a mixture benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, benzoylnitrile, benzoic acid mandelonitrile benzoate. Hydrogen cyanide qualitatively the picric test. This is first identification these...
Abstract In the light of growing interest in discovering new sources natural antimicrobial agents, we extracted and tested efficiency julid defensive secretions comparison with commercially used antibiotic antimycotics. This work involved chemical characterization Cylindroiulus boleti (C. L. Koch, 1847), Megaphyllum bosniense (Verhoeff, 1897) M. unilineatum 1838), as well vitro evaluation their activity against 11 bacteria, one yeast eight filamentous fungi. Compounds analysed included p...
Given the proliferation of new media technologies today's immigrant children and youth are experiencing effects time–space compression in domain interpersonal interactions. Increasingly, they able to simultaneously engage developmental activities across their native host societies. If migration is no longer a one-way binary choice, but rather culturally dialectical process involving fluid articulation consciousness identity multiple cultural landscapes, how can we structure teaching learning...
Abstract The Covid-19 pandemic and resulting damage is often portrayed in staggering numbers statistics. This article offers, by contrast, a personal qualitative account of employees, volunteers, young residents at refugee home Berlin, Germany. Through the story boy who has spent past 4 years several Berlin’s 84 remaining accommodations, we examine inequalities that already existed Germany how exacerbated them. To provide ample context, critically assess so-called Welcome Classes children...
Although millipedes (Diplopoda) represent one of the most diverse classes arthropods, data concerning details their mating behaviour are very scarce. In this work, we explored European millipede Pachyiulus hungaricus under laboratory conditions, and its relationship with size shape certain morphological traits. We conducted 3 types behavioural tests: a arena test, female choice male test. Premating was "sequenced" in 5 steps and, together duration copulation, scored all assays. Males were...
Parental care in the geographically widespread cryptopid scolopendromorph Cryptops hortensis (Donovan) is described for first time. It was observed that adult female rolls her body around mass of hatchlings with ventral side against brood. This finding supports hypothesis within brooding centipedes, position terga outwards a plesiomorphic state and probably general feature all Scolopendromorpha. In addition, major external morphological characters fetus instar adolescens I are described.
As the fourth hydrophilous species of genus Typhloiulus Latzel, 1884, new T. balcanicus Antić sp. nov. is described from two caves in Stara Planina Mountains Serbia. A brief discussion relationships between and congeners with modified unmodified mouthparts presented, as well short notes on habitat comments other semiaquatic millipedes mouthparts.
Members of the millipede order Julida rely on dominantly quinonic defensive secretions with several minor, non-quinonic components. The free radical-scavenging activities ethanol, methanol, hexane, and dichloromethane extracts emitted by Pachyiulus hungaricus (Karsch, 1881) Megaphyllum unilineatum (C. L. Koch, 1838) were investigated using ABTS, DPPH, total reducing power (TRP) tests. obtained also tested for inhibition acetylcholinesterase tyrosinase activity. Finally, antifungal potential...
A new cave polydesmid, Brachydesmus sjenicae n. sp. is described from Ledena Pecina Cave, in southwest Serbia. The taxon belongs to the vermosanus-group of species. Relationships with congeners are briefly discussed. distribution map and key given for all currently known taxa belonging this group
A new troglobitic diplopod, Hyleoglomeris faberi n. sp., is described from a cave in western Serbia. Taxonomic relationships among European members of the genus Verhoeff, 1910 (and some related taxa) and number biogeographical data are briefly discussed.
