Abstract Well‐defined basement membrane laminin was seen in 98/158 (62%) rectal adenocarcinomas stained by an immunoperoxidase method. Only 27 (28%) patients with laminin‐positive tumours developed distant metastases, compared 39 (65%) laminin‐negative carcinomas. The corrected 5‐year survival rates for and were 65% 23%, respectively. Twenty‐five out of 30 (83%) well‐differentiated only 3/15 (17%) poorly differentiated contained laminin, moderately carcinomas showing intermediate status...

Using high-performance liquid chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance we identified vicianin as the cyanogenic compound of Phlebodium aureum. The (R)-hydroxynitrile lyase involved during cyanogenesis in catabolism aglycon ([R]-mandelonitrile) was purified to apparent homogeneity. holoenzyme is a homomultimer with subunits Mr = 20,000. At least three isoforms enzyme exist. In contrast other hydroxynitrile lyases, mandelonitrile (MDL) from P. aureum not inhibited by sulfhydryl- or...

Protein disulphide-isomerase activity was determined in homogenates of chick-embryo tissues. Activities were highest tissues active procollagen synthesis and maximal at the developmental stage synthesis. These variations protein correlate closely with those previously observed for protocollagen hydroxylase activities.

Four hundred and forty-five randomly selected hospitalised patients had their nutritional status assessed from anthropometric, haematological biochemical data. Nutritional was compared between survivors non-survivors at baseline, 6 weeks months. Using Cox's proportional hazard analysis, we measured the association assessment variables 1-year mortality after adjusting for disability, chronic illness, medications, smoking tissue inflammation. significantly worse amongst with survivors, showed...
