Pulsed power accelerators compress electrical energy in space and time to provide versatile experimental platforms for high density inertial confinement fusion science. The 80-TW “Z” pulsed facility at Sandia National Laboratories is the largest device world today. Z discharges up 22 MJ of stored its capacitor banks into a current pulse that rises 100 ns peaks as 30 MA low-inductance cylindrical targets. Considerable progress has been made over past 15 years use precision scientific tool....

Abstract For the past several years, JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des . 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments D, H and T, leading up to 2020 first with 50%/50% D–T mixtures since 1997 ever plasmas ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. this purpose, concerted physics technology was launched view prepare campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses key elements developed by directly contributing preparation. intense preparation...
We evaluate the factors associated with an officer’s decision to search a driver or vehicle after routine traffic stop, and we compare accuracy of these searches by looking at share leading arrest. Racial disparities in rates race gender are similar for all types officers; tend Black male drivers higher than any other demographic. White officers have drivers. Further, they conduct greatest “fruitless searches” (those not arrest), particularly targeted on those number cumulative disadvantages.
Reducing poverty is important for those affected, society and the economy. Poverty remains entrenched in UK, despite considerable research efforts to understand its causes possible solutions. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation, with Centre Science Policy at University of Cambridge, ran a democratic, transparent, consensual exercise involving 45 participants from government, non-governmental organisations, academia identify 100 questions that, if answered, would help reduce or prevent poverty....
Abstract JET, the world’s largest operating tokamak with unique Be/W wall and tritium handling capability, completed a Deuterium-Tritium (D-T) campaign in 2021 (Maggi et al 29th Fusion Energy Conf. ) following decade of preparatory experiments, dedicated enhancements, technical rehearsals training (Horton 2016 Eng. Des. 109–111 925). Operation raises significant technical, safety scientific challenges not encountered standard protium or deuterium operation. This contribution describes...
Experimental results are presented that characterize the implosion dynamics and radiation output of wire-array Z pinches on 1-MA, 100-ns rise-time Cornell Beam Research Accelerator (COBRA) [J. B. Greenly et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 79, 073501 (2008)]. The load geometries investigated include 20-mm-tall cylindrical arrays ranging from 4to16mm in diameter, consisting 8, 16, or 32 wires either tungsten, aluminum, Invar (64% iron, 36% nickel). Diagnostics fielded an optical streak camera, a...
Bright, intense x-ray sources with extreme plasma parameters (micropinch plasmas) have previously been characterized at 0.1–0.4MA, but the scaling of such higher current is poorly understood. The source size and radiation power 1MA X pinches were studied as a function wire material (Al, Ti, Mo, W) number (1-, 2-, 8-, 32-, 64-wire configurations). smallest bright spots observed from 32-wire tungsten pinches, which produced ⩽11–16μm, ∼2J, 1–10GW 3–5keV radiation.
Gas-puff Z-pinch experiments were conducted on the 1 MA, 200 ns pulse duration Cornell Beam Research Accelerator (COBRA) pulsed power generator in order to achieve an understanding of dynamics and instability development imploding stagnating plasma. The triple-nozzle gas-puff valve, pre-ionizer, load hardware are described. Specific diagnostics for experiments, including a Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence system measuring radial neutral density profiles along with Shearing Interferometer...
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the nature, causes and consequences UK’s productivity problems whether these may be addressed through new technologies artificial intelligence (AI). Design/methodology/approach This reviews literature on explain how it relates earnings within different theoretical frameworks, advocating a “power over rents” framework as most realistic. It explains twin their potential causes, critically assessing capacity for AI address them. highlights...
The limited understanding of the mechanisms driving mass ablation rate cylindrical wires arrays is presently one major limitations in predicting array performance at higher current levels required for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ignition. Continued investigation this phenomenon crucial to realize considerable potential wire drive both ICF and energy, by enabling a predictive capability computational modeling. We present first study directly compare rates as function rise rate....
This study sought to explore undergraduate nursing students' perceptions of the role and value their bioscience tutors in a blended learning curriculum.Blended approaches typically have reduced face-to-face contact with tutors-particularly subjects which students traditionally found difficult, move more web-based resources may compound this difficulty.Qualitative descriptive study. This qualitative was conducted 19 enrolled subjects, at large university outer metropolitan Sydney, Australia...
Photonic Doppler velocimetry tracks motion during high-speed, single-event experiments using telecommunication fiber components. The same technology can be applied in situations where there is no actual motion, but rather a change the optical path length. Migration of plasma into vacuum alters refractive index near probe, while intense radiation modifies itself. These changes diagnose extreme environments flexible, time-resolved manner.
Abstract This paper examines the specialist schools programme in England and, particular, issue of co-operation between and non-specialist secondary schools. It explores policy how it has evolved over time, before examining literature relating to schools, segregation achievement. A small-scale research study, which involved interviews with officials at national local levels, a survey is described results analysed. Although appears have facilitated there are some major barriers that need be...

Optical fiber diagnostics are extensively used in pulsed power experiments, such as the Sandia Z machine. However, radiation produced a environment can significantly affect these measurements. Catastrophic darkening may be mitigated with shielding, but no flexible material stop all by machine and/or target. Radiation-induced refractive index modulations particularly challenging for optical interferometry. Several approaches radiation-tolerant photonic Doppler velocimetry discussed here.
Multi-keV X-ray radiation sources have a wide range of applications, from biomedical studies and research on thermonuclear fusion to materials science astrophysics. The refurbished Z pulsed power machine at the Sandia National Laboratories produces intense multi-keV X-rays argon Z-pinches, but for krypton Z-pinch, yield decreases much faster with atomic number ZA than similar Ignition Facility (NIF) laser Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. To investigate whether fundamental energy deposition...
Some issues concerning high-current electron beam transport from the X pinch cross point to diagnostic system and measurements of current by Faraday cups are discussed. Results computer simulation propagation cup give limits for measured beams having different energy spreads. The is partially neutralized as it propagates a system, but within diagnostic, space charge effects can be very important. Experimental results show evidence such effects.
