On-Demand Activity Oligodendroglia ensheath axons in the brain with myelin, which provides insulation that speeds up transmission of neuronal electrical impulses. The process myelination human goes on for decades, concurrent all manner development and cognitive activity. Gibson et al. (p. 10.1126/science.1252304 , published online 10 April; see Perspective by Bechler ffrench-Constant ) used optogenetics to study response neural Electrical activity motor cortex awake mice led proliferation...

The preovulatory LH surge is triggered when the circadian pacemaker, bilateral suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), stimulates GnRH system in presence of high estrogen concentrations (positive feedback). Importantly, during remainder estrous cycle, estradiol inhibits release via negative feedback. We have recently documented a novel mammalian RFamide-related peptide (RFRP), putative gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH), that presumably acts upstream to modulate feedback effects estrogen. present...

Background Circadian disruptions through frequent transmeridian travel, rotating shift work, and poor sleep hygiene are associated with an array of physical mental health maladies, including marked deficits in human cognitive function. Despite anecdotal correlational reports suggesting a negative impact circadian on brain function, this possibility has not been experimentally examined. Methodology/Principal Findings In the present study, we investigated whether experimental ‘jet lag’ (i.e.,...

Abstract Increased dietary intake of choline early in life improves performance adult rats on memory tasks and prevents their age‐related decline. Because neurogenesis the hippocampus also declines with age, we investigated whether prenatal availability affects hippocampal Sprague–Dawley modifies neurogenic response to environmental stimulation. On embryonic days (ED) 12–17, pregnant ate a choline‐supplemented (SUP‐5 g/kg), sufficient (SFF‐1.1 or choline‐free (DEF) semisynthetic diet. Adult...

Abstract Study objectives Sleep disruption is common in people with cancer and survivors, but understanding the mechanisms driving these problems difficult due to heterogeneity among cancers, patients, treatment modalities. We investigated whether antifolate chemotherapeutic agent methotrexate (MTX) promotes changes sleep independent of adult mice. Methods Adult mice (> 7 weeks old, both sexes, n=13) were exposed either a clinically relevant chemotherapy regimen (n=7) or saline...

Exercise shows promise for improving physical and cognitive functioning, quality of life, mood in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Structured interviews have suggested potential factors influencing participation exercise this population, but no studies examined if they predict behaviour.Thirty persons PD completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire a semi-structured interview. Time spent exercising was calculated by summing responses recreation, sport, leisure-time...

A new syndrome, characterised by acute respiratory distress and abnormalities of the skin, hair thyroid, was apparent cause neonatal death in 35 (24 per cent) 146 piglets sired a large white boar four small commercial pig units. The syndrome appears to be genetic origin, inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Its similarities with (RDS) newborn infant "barker" foal are discussed.
