Visual function impairment from diabetic retinopathy can have a considerable impact on patient's quality of life. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) is most commonly used to assess and guide clinical trials. However, BCVA affected late in the disease process, not early disease, does capture some disturbances described by patients with diabetes. The goal this report evaluate relationship between retinal (DRD) parameters determine which if any them may be future DRD staging system.
We identified retinal ganglion cells undergoing apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death, in an eye 70-year-old man with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. The TUNEL (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase—mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate-biotin end nick labeling) staining and the presence condensed, fragmented nuclear bodies were used to identify apoptotic cells. Examination TUNEL-stained sections revealed occasional layer pyknotic nuclei brown reaction product, representing positive...
Optic neuropathy is the leading cause of irreversible blindness, and a paradigm for central nervous system axonal disease. The primary event damage to retinal ganglion cell axons, with subsequent death body by apoptosis. Trials neuroprotection these other neuronal diseases have mostly failed, primarily because mechanisms in animals do not necessarily translate humans. We developed methodology imaging an intracellular transduction pathway that signals living animal. Using longitudinal...
Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) undergo apoptosis after axonal injury. The time course of cell death is variable and depends in part on the degree injury sustained. Decreasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels or shifting redox state to reduction promotes survival RGCs tissue culture axotomy. It was hypothesized that a specific ROS, superoxide anion, acts as an intracellular signaling molecule for RGC axotomy.Intracellular were measured dissociation retrograde-labeled rat with use...
Cell lines are frequently used to elucidate mechanisms of disease pathophysiology. Yet extrapolation results with cell neurodegenerative disorders is difficult because they mitotic and usually have other non-neuronal properties. The RGC-5 line has many features retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Despite its expression Thy-1 NMDA receptors, as found in primary RGCs, this line's ability proliferate appearance differentiate it from central neurons, complicating use for the study neuronal survival,...
Visual information travels from the eye to brain via optic nerve, a 3.5-mm-thick central nervous system structure approximately same diameter as cable connecting video camera computer. As might be expected, damage nerve deprives of visual input and causes loss. Nonarteritic anterior ischemic neuropathy (NAION) is most common acute middle late life, with an annual incidence up 10 cases per 100 000 individuals older than 50 years. 1 It characterized by rapid painless unilateral loss,...
