Using time-kill methodology, we investigated the interactions of fosfomycin with meropenem or colistin gentamicin against 17 genetically distinct Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates carrying blaKPC-2. Synergy was observed 64.7 and 11.8% tested isolates, while combination resulted in indifference. All studied combinations showed improved bactericidal activity, compared to alone prevented development resistance 69.2, 53.8, 81.8% susceptible respectively.
Financial burden caused by cancer treatment is associated with material loss, distress, and poorer outcomes. resources exist to support patients but identification of need difficult. We sought develop test a tool accurately predict an individual's risk financial toxicity based on clinical, demographic, patient-reported data prior initiation breast treatment. We surveyed 611 undergoing therapy at MD Anderson Cancer Center. collected using the validated COmprehensive Score for Toxicity (COST)...
Previous reports individually identified different factors that predict death after burns. The authors employed the multi-center American Burn Association's (ABA) National Repository (NBR) to elucidate which parameters have highest negative impact on burn mortality. We audited data from NBR v8.0 for years 2002-2011 and included 137,061 patients in our study. cases were stratified into two cohorts based primary outcome of death/survival then evaluated demographic data, intraoperative details,...
The relationship between treatment-related, cost-associated distress "financial toxicity" (FT) and quality-of life (QOL) in breast cancer patients remains poorly characterized. This study leverages validated patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) to analyze the association FT QOL satisfaction among women undergoing ablative surgery. This is a single-institution cross-sectional survey of all female (>18 years old) who underwent lumpectomy or mastectomy January 2018 June 2019. was measured...
A multidisciplinary work group involving stakeholders from various backgrounds and societies convened to revise the guideline for reduction mammaplasty. The goal was develop evidence-based patient care recommendations using new American Society of Plastic Surgeons methodology. prioritized reviewing evidence around need surgery as first-line treatment, regardless resection weight or volume. Other factors evaluated included drains, postoperative oral antibiotics, risk that increase...
Background: Posterior mandibulectomy defects can be reconstructed using either soft tissue or vascularized bone. The authors hypothesize that advances in computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD-CAM) have resulted osteocutaneous free flaps now proving superior to soft-tissue flaps. Methods: conducted a retrospective review of all flap reconstructions posterior where the condyle was resected from 2005 2016. Results: Overall, 291 patients (mean age, 56.9 years; mean body mass index, 26.2...
Summary: Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) or Masson’s tumor is a rare benign entity commonly found on the head, neck, and upper extremities. It usually arises within blood vessel but considered to be nonneoplastic reactive process often associated with vascular injury. Typically, IPEHs cause no symptoms present as slowly growing soft-tissue masses. Given their prevalent location indolent clinical presentation, plastic surgeon should familiar this entity. We are...
Background: Although autologous free-flap breast reconstruction is the most durable means of reconstruction, it unclear how many additional operations are needed to optimize aesthetic outcome reconstructed breast. The present study aimed determine average number elective revision procedures performed for reasons in patients undergoing unilateral and analyze variables associated with procedures. Methods: A retrospective review all abdominal-based reconstructions from 2000 2014 was undertaken...
Background Postoperative complications are an independent predictor of poor survival across several tumors. However, there is limited literature on the association between postoperative morbidity and long‐term following total laryngectomy (TL) for cancer. Methods We conducted a retrospective review all TL patients at single institution from 2008 to 2013. Demographic clinical data were collected analyzed, including postsurgical outcomes, which classified using Clavien‐Dindo system....
Background: Reduction mammaplasty is the standard of care for symptomatic macromastia. The process requesting insurance coverage reduction cumbersome and potentially controversial, policies vary significantly. goal our analysis to identify trends in rates, assess presence disparities, propose ways increase chances successful preauthorization. Methods: authors performed a retrospective review preauthorizations at single institution from 2012 2017. Insurance company names were deidentified....
Background: High treatment costs associated with breast cancer are a substantial burden to patients and society. Despite mounting awareness, patient perspectives about the value of cost discussions in reconstruction risk factors for financial distress unknown. Methods: The authors performed single-institution, cross-sectional survey all women who underwent following mastectomy or lumpectomy reduction. Questions were derived from previously published items, leveraged regression analysis...
Background: The impact of breast reconstruction on financial toxicity remains poorly understood despite growing awareness. authors sought to illustrate the relationship between subtypes and risk toxicity. Methods: conducted a single-institution cross-sectional survey all female cancer patients undergoing any form January 2018 June 2019. Financial was measured by means validated Comprehensive Score for Toxicity instrument. Demographics, clinical course, coping strategies were abstracted from...
Background: Nonvascular bone grafts larger than 4 cm have a 50 percent nonunion rate in spine surgery. Vascular flaps are one potential solution; however, their utility surgery has not been fully elucidated. The authors hypothesized that the addition of free fibula flap after oncologic vertebrectomy would safely potentiate union. Methods: performed retrospective analysis, including all patients who underwent for primary tumor at institution from 2002 to 2017. Patients were divided into two...
Background: The various approaches to reduction and fixation of isolated displaced zygomatic arch fractures have not been well studied. authors compared established treatment methods for both aesthetic functional outcomes. Methods: Consecutive patients with a minimum 6 months’ follow-up were studied in five groups: group 1, intraoral approach (no fixation); 2, temporal 3, coronal flap plate fixation; 4, external splint 5, no surgery. Perioperative complications, facial contour symmetry...
The incidence of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) for unilateral breast cancer (UBC) has continued to increase, despite an absent survival benefit except in populations at highest risk developing (CBC). CPM rates may be higher rural but causes remain unclear. A study performed our institution previously found that 21.8 % patients with UBC underwent from 2000 2009. This aimed evaluate the trend a single serving population and identify rate average-risk patients. Retrospective...
Background: Type 1 internal hemipelvectomies and total sacrectomies cause significant biomechanical instability, demanding pelvic ring reconstruction for ambulation torso support. Previously described methods include autografts, allografts, implants, commonly with poor long-term outcomes. The authors hypothesized that the free fibula flap spinopelvic is safe effective, associated a high bony union rate superior functional Methods: performed retrospective review of all patients who underwent...
Summary: Neurothekeomas are rare benign tumors commonly found on the head, neck, and upper extremities of women younger individuals. They thought to be nerve sheath origin usually present as painless, slow growing masses. We a case cellular neurothekeoma nasal ala an 8-year-old girl with no previous history trauma or piercings. Differential diagnosis, treatment options, special considerations regarding potentially atypical characteristics discussed.
Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a lifelong condition that can impact the quality of life, affecting approximately 20% breast cancer patients. Risk factors for development BCRL after mastectomy in rural populations have not been studied. Retrospective review patients from 2017 to 2021 was performed at single institution. Statistical analysis included logistic and linear regression models. 475 were included, 40 (8.4%) diagnosed with BCRL. Increased odds developing significantly...
