PURPOSE It is uncertain whether, and to what extent, hormonal contraceptives increase breast cancer (BC) risk for germline BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation carriers. METHODS Using pooled observational data from four prospective cohort studies, associations between contraceptive use BC unaffected female carriers were assessed using Cox regression. RESULTS Of 3,882 1,509 carriers, 53% 71%, respectively, had ever used at least 1 year (median cumulative duration of use, 4.8 5.7 years, respectively)....

Objectives. To test whether shade sails will increase the use of passive recreation areas (PRAs). Methods. We conducted a stratified randomized pretest–posttest controlled design study in Melbourne, Australia, and Denver, Colorado, 2010 to 2014. sample 144 public parks with 2 PRAs full sun 1:3 ratio treatment or control. Shade were built at 1 PRA per park. The outcome was any (n = 576 pretest n posttest observations; 100% follow-up). Results. Compared control (adjusted probability use: 0.14,...

Degraded parks in disadvantaged areas are underutilized for recreation, which may impact long-term health. Using a natural experiment, we examined the effects of local government refurbishments to (n = 3 intervention; n comparison) low socioeconomic (LSEA) Melbourne on park use, health behavior, social engagement and psychological well-being. Amenities promoting physical activity sun protection included walking paths, playground equipment built shade. Outcomes were measured via systematic...

Our aim was to estimate how long‐term mortality following breast cancer diagnosis depends on age at diagnosis, tumor estrogen receptor (ER) status, and the time already survived. We used population‐based Australian Breast Cancer Family Study which followed‐up 1,196 women enrolled during 1992–1999 when aged <60 years with a first primary invasive cancer, over‐sampled for younger ages whom pathology features ER status were measured. There 375 deaths (median follow‐up = 15.7; range 0.8–21.4,...

Abstract DNA methylation in peripheral blood is a potential biomarker of gastric cancer risk which could be used for early detection. We conducted prospective case–control study nested within the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study. Genomic was prepared from samples collected median 12 years before diagnosis cases (N = 168). Controls 163) were matched to on sex, year birth, country and sample type using incidence density sampling. Genome-wide measured Infinium HumanMethylation450K Beadchip....

Abstract BACKGROUND: Current use of hormonal contraception is associated with a 20-30% relative increase in the risk breast cancer (BC) for women general population compared never using. Longer duration higher risk, and remains elevated above that users at least 5 years after cessation. Most published data are various formulations combined oral contraceptive pill, but associations similar progestogen-only contraceptives, including intrauterine devices. For who contraceptives their 20s 30s,...

Abstract Background Breast cancer survival in Australia varies according to socio‐economic status (SES) and between rural urban places of residence. Part this disparity may be due differences prognostic factors at the time diagnosis. Methods Women with invasive breast diagnosed from 2008 until 2012 ( n = 14,165) were identified Victorian Cancer Registry followed up for 5 years, death or other causes recorded. A score, based on stage diagnosis, grade, whether was detected via screening,...

Increased implementation of proven prevention strategies is required to combat rising breast cancer incidence. We assessed use risk reducing medication (RRMed) by Australian women at elevated risk. Only 2.4% had ever used RRMed. Higher was statistically significantly associated with RRMed (OR 1.82, 95%CI: 1.08-3.07, p = 0.02 for ≥30% lifetime compared 16%-29% risk), but parity, education level and family history were not. Breast medications are underutilised. Efforts needed incorporate...
