Preamble by Philip E. Nelson, 2007 World Food Prize Laureate; Professor Emeritus, Science Dept., Purdue Univ. Just as society has evolved over time, our food system also centuries into a global of immense size and complexity. The commitment science technology professionals to advancing the food, ensuring safe abundant supply, contributing healthier people everywhere is integral that evolution. scientists technologists are versatile, interdisciplinary, collaborative practitioners in...

Inclusion of the mesentery during resection for colorectal cancer is associated with improved outcomes but has yet to be evaluated in Crohn's disease. This study aimed determine rate surgical recurrence after inclusion ileocolic disease.Surgical rates were compared between two cohorts. Cohort A [n = 30] underwent conventional where was divided flush intestine. B 34] which included excision mesentery. The relationship mesenteric disease severity and determined a separate cohort 94]. activity...

Background Aetiology of births involving very low birthweight (VLBW) and extremely (ELBW) infants is heterogeneous preventive strategies remain elusive. Socioenvironmental measures implemented as Ireland’s response to the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19) pandemic represented a national lockdown, have possibly influenced health well-being pregnant women unborn infants. Methods Regional trends VLBW ELBW in one designated area Ireland over two decades were analysed. Poisson regression rate ratio...

ABSTRACT Among food-borne pathogens, some strains could be resistant to hydrostatic pressure treatment. This information is necessary establish processing parameters ensure safety of pressure-pasteurized foods (N. Kalchayanand, A. Sikes, C. P. Dunne, and B. Ray, J. Food Prot. 61:425–431, 1998). We studied variation in resistance among Listeria monocytogenes , Staphylococcus aureus Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella species at two temperatures pressurization. Early-stationary-phase cells 1%...

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strain W81 , isolated from the rhizosphere of field-grown sugar beet, produced extracellular enzymes chitinase and protease inhibited growth phytopathogenic fungus Pythium ultimum in vitro. The role these lytic interaction between P. was investigated using Tn 5 insertion mutants incapable producing (W81M1), (W81M2) or two (W81A1). Lytic enzyme activity restored W81A1 following introduction a 15 kb cosmid-borne fragment genomic DNA. Incubation presence commercial...

We report here that both ultrahigh hydrostatic pressure (UHP) and electroporation (EP) induced sublethal injury to bacterial cells surviving the treatments. The injured of gram-positive -negative bacteria became sensitive bacteriocins pediocin AcH nisin. Bacteriocins in combination with either UHP or EP have greater antibacterial effectiveness than alone.

The potato cyst nematode Globodera rostochiensis is an important pest of (Solanum tuberosum). Pseudomonas fluorescens F113, which produces 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG), was investigated as a potential biocontrol agent against G. rostochiensis. Exposure cysts to the pseudomonad, under in vitro conditions or soil microcosms, almost doubled ability eggs hatch. percentage mobile juveniles reduced threefold following their incubation presence both and soil. Results obtained with...

Colonic mobilization requires separation of mesocolon from underlying fascia. Despite the surgical importance planes formed by these structures, no study has formally characterized their microscopic features. The aim this was to determine histological and electron appearance mesocolon, fascia, retroperitoneum, prior after colonic mobilization. In 24 cadavers, samples were taken right, transverse, descending, sigmoid mesocolon. In 12 specimens stained with hematoxylin eosin (3 sections) or...
