In November 2010, ≈27,000 (≈45%) inhabitants of Östersund, Sweden, were affected by a waterborne outbreak cryptosporidiosis. The was characterized rapid onset and high attack rate, especially among young middle-aged persons. Young age, number infected family members, amount water consumed daily, gluten intolerance identified as risk factors for acquiring Also, chronic intestinal disease age significantly associated with prolonged diarrhea. Identification Cryptosporidium hominis subtype...

A previously healthy male patient had detectable monkeypox virus DNA in saliva 76 days after laboratory confirmation of infection. comprehensive characterization viral kinetics and a detailed follow-up indicated declining risk for transmission during the weeks symptoms appeared.

Within I-MOVE (European programme to monitor seasonal and pandemic influenza vaccine effectiveness (IVE)) five countries conducted IVE pilot case-control studies in 2008-9. One hundred sixty sentinel general practitioners (GP) swabbed all elderly consulting for influenza-like illness (ILI). Influenza confirmed cases were compared negative controls. We a pooled analysis obtain summary the age group of >or=65 years. measured each study assessed heterogeneity between qualitatively using I2...

Background and aims: Sharing of unsterile injection equipment contributes to transmission hepatitis C virus (HCV), HIV B (HBV) among people who inject drugs (PWID) but is largely preventable through needle exchange programmes (NEP). Sweden has been one the last countries in Europe scale up access NEP for PWID, consequently have high prevalence rates HCV HIV. The aim study was investigate demographic drug-related determinants risk behaviours, sharing needle/syringe paraphernalia, patterns...

The incidence of invasive group A streptococcal infections in Sweden was 6.1 per 100,000 population 2012, the highest since disease became notifiable 2004. Furthermore, January and February 2013 marked a dramatic increase cases notified, partly explainable by an emm1/T1 isolates, type previously shown to cause severe more often than other types. Healthcare providers health authorities neighbouring countries have been informed about this increase.

Chickenpox vaccine is not included in the routine childhood vaccination programme Sweden. The aim of this study was to estimate baseline national chickenpox disease burden, as comprehensive studies, required for an assessment regarding introduction, are lacking. We used available health care registers and databases; death register, hospitalisations communicable notifications database, Stockholm County on consultations specialist primary care, temporary parental benefit a sick child, searches...

Background: Early diagnosis of HIV is important for the prognosis individual patients, because antiretroviral treatment can be started at appropriate time, and public health, transmission prevented. Methods: Data were collected from 767 patients who diagnosed in Sweden during 2003–2010 infected or born abroad. A recent infection testing algorithm (RITA) was applied to BED-EIA test results (OD-n < 0.8), CD4 counts (≥ 200 cells/μl), clinical information. classification used as indicator early...

Background To follow the impact of 2009 influenza pandemic in Denmark, surveillance was extended with a system monitoring potentially influenza-associated hospitalisations. Methodology/Principal Findings National administrative data from 2004–2010 automatic reporting all hospital visits and admissions Denmark (population 5.5 million) were used. In-patient hospitalisations linked to ICD-10 codes for conditions (influenza, viral bacterial pneumonia, respiratory distress, febrile convulsion)...

Decreased virus circulation resulting diminished exogenous boosting predicted to lead a surge in HZ incidence. Abstract Aim This study explored the differences in demographic and socio‐economic factors between children hospitalised due to four common viral infections. Methods Demographic data were obtained from Statistics Sweden on >3000 admitted Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital 2009–2014 with rotavirus, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) or chickenpox. We compared case groups using logistic regression rotavirus cases as reference. Results There median age at admission; RSV younger...
