A 5-year experience of 50 endoscopic transaxillary dorsal sympathectomies is presented. The procedure was successful in either curing or improving the symptoms hyperhidrosis great majority patients. commonest side effects were compensatory sweating (75%) and gustatory (48%); despite this, there an extremely high level patient satisfaction. Permanent Horner's syndrome did not occur. effective, simple, cheap, requires only overnight stay; recommended as method choice for surgical treatment...

A total of 333 patients with stable intermittent claudication at recruitment were followed up for 6 years to determine risk factors associated subsequent mortality. Cardiovascular diseases the underlying cause death in 78% 114 who died. The strongest independent predictor during follow-up period was plasma fibrinogen level, an increase 1 milligram being a nearly two-fold probability within next years. Age, low ankle/brachial pressure index and past history myocardial infarction also...

We have validated an established animal model of acute inflammatory bowel disease in indomethacin-treated rats. Studies both vitro and vivo 51chromium-labelled ethylenediamine tetra-acetate (51Cr-EDTA) permeability tissue myeloperoxidase activity, a marker cell invasion, showed increased enzyme levels, respectively, treated animals compared to controls (in 51Cr-EDTA permeability: (mean (SE] control 0.10 (0.02) microliter/mg per tissue, experimental 0.17 (p < 0.01, 2 way analysis...

In the Cambridge renal transplant unit percutaneous needle biopsies of transplants have been extensively used to help identify cause impaired allograft function. During period 1966--1973, 154 269 allografts transplanted were biopsied at least once during first 90 days after transplantation. this survey relationship between morphological changes in these biopsy specimens and function 1, 3 5 years transplantation is assessed. A highly significant direct exists early graft failure presence...

Abstract Acute pancreatitis has a mortality of about 10%: this figure not changed over the last 20 years. A retrospective audit fatal acute was performed in teaching hospital with catchment population 750,000 patients to examine patient characteristics. Using Hospital Activity Analysis code 577.0, all cases were studied six-year period 1987-93. Additionally, post mortem diagnoses traced. The overall rate Nottingham at time study 35%. All available records, X-ray and biochemical data...

PURPOSE: A mathematic model was developed to quantify colonic reservoir pouch capacity and allow comparison with of the parent segment from which fashioned. METHODS: Using geometry, calculated various capacities were enumerated. RESULTS: From this model, ideal dimensions can be predicted, are 6 7 cm undistended bowel circumference limb lengths 8 10 cm. CONCLUSIONS: Such a maximizes colon ratio has between 60 105 ml.
