The application of THz to medical imaging is experiencing a surge in both interest and federal funding. A brief overview the field provided along with promising emerging applications ongoing research. phenomenology discussed tradeoffs are identified. system, operating at ~525 GHz center frequency ~125 response normalized bandwidth introduced details regarding principles operation provided. Two presented: skin burns cornea. For burns, images second degree, partial thickness were obtained rat...
We have designed, simulated, fabricated, and tested an ultra-wideband (UWB) multifunctional communication radar system utilizing a single shared transmitting antenna aperture. Two surface acoustic wave bandpass chirp filters were used to modulate the communications pulses, generating linear frequency modulation waveforms with opposite slope factors. The operates at center of 750 MHz 500 instantaneous bandwidth. measured range resolution is 63 cm (25 in) using targets cross section 2.7 m <sup...
A reflective pulsed terahertz imaging system based on direct detection was developed and used to obtain high-resolution images of a porcine skin specimen with superficial partial-thickness (second-degree) burns. Images were also obtained the sample through ten layers dry medical (cotton) gauze minimal image degradation. The burned unburned regions had large differences in reflectivity, displaying clear delineation [20 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) difference signal] between both images....
This work introduces the potential application of terahertz (THz) sensing to field ophthalmology, where it is uniquely suited due its nonionizing photon energy and high sensitivity water content. Reflective THz imaging spectrometry data are reported on ex-vivo porcine corneas prepared with uniform concentrations using polyethylene glycol (PEG) solutions. At 79% concentration by mass, measured reflectivity cornea was 20.4%, 14.7%, 11.7%, 9.6%, 7.4% at 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1 THz, respectively....
Abstract Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an interventional nonpharmacologic treatment used for chronic pain and other indications. Methods evaluating the safety efficacy of SCS have evolved from uncontrolled retrospective studies to prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Although randomization overcomes certain types bias, additional challenges validity RCTs include blinding, choice control groups, nonspecific effects variables (eg, paresthesia, device programming recharging,...
Significance and Goals: The surgical removal of intracranial hemangioblastoma presents various technical difficulties that may be hard to convey trainees. This study aims present insights on the forces exerted by a sensorized bipolar forceps tissue, measured in Newtons (N), during procedures.
Abstract Objectives/Hypothesis: The endoscopic endonasal transcribriform approach (EETA) is a viable alternative option for resection of selected anterior skull base (ASB) tumors. However, this technique results in the creation large cribriform defects. Some have reported use rigid substitute ASB reconstruction to prevent postoperative frontal lobe sagging. We evaluate degree sagging using our triple‐layer [fascia lata, acellular dermal allograft, and pedicled nasoseptal flap (PNSF)] without...
This paper reports the results of a complete circumferential scan human tooth and its underlying dentino-enamel junction using ultrasound at frequencies in 10-MHz range. The imagery shows clearly two-dimensional contour with depth lateral resolution approximately 100 /spl mu/m 750 mu/m, respectively. resulting sonograph is compared an optical micrograph same to verify accuracy ultrasonic technique. are significant step toward biolocation submillimeter size features within volume.
Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) has been reported to cause early inflammatory changes, ectopic bony formation, adjacent level fusion, radiculitis, and osteolysis. The authors describe the case of a patient who developed fibroblastic cyst formation around BMP sponge after lumbar resulting in compressive radiculopathy. A 70-year-old woman presented with left L-4 L-5 radiculopathy caused by Grade I spondylolisthesis herniated disc at L4-5. She underwent minimally invasive transforaminal...
Endoscopic endonasal transplanum transtuberculum (EETT) resection of parasellar skull base (SB) tumors often results in large SB defects with intraoperative high-flow cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks. Reconstruction these can be challenging because the size, communication suprasellar cistern, and close proximity to optic nerves chiasm. Recent studies have postulated that may associated increased postoperative CSF leakage. We review our experience reconstruction after EETT tumors. Challenges...
Abstract Surgical error and resulting complication have significant patient economic consequences. Inappropriate exertion of tool-tissue force is a common variable for such error, that can be objectively monitored by sensorized tools. The rich digital output establishes powerful skill assessment sharing platform surgical performance training. Here we present SmartForceps data app incorporating an Expert Room environment tracking analysing the objective finesse through multiple interfaces...
Terahertz medical imaging has emerged as a promising new field because of its non-ionizing photon energy and acute sensitivity to water concentration. To better understand the primary contrast mechanism in THz tissues, reflectivity varying concentrations was measured. Using pulsed reflective system, 0.3 mm thin paper sample with probed from measured data noise equivalent delta concentration (NEΔWC) 0.054% derived. The system is based on photoconductive source time-gated waveguide-mounted...
Objective: The aim of this study is to avoid psychological distress the mother and baby by avoiding General Anaesthesia overnight hospital stay which will be required, if abscess drained incision drainage leaving an ugly scar on breast. Materials Methods: In our prospective study, 50 patients with breast abscesses were treated needle aspiration pus, oral antibiotics, repeat aspiration, necessary. All outpatients, in Department Surgery, Regional Institute Medical Sciences, Imphal....
Accurate measurement of soft tissue thickness is needed prior to dental implant placement and surgical uncovering the implant. Ultrasonography has many potential advantages for use in surgery, but not yet been made suitable clinical use. A 2D ultrasound imaging system a mechanical positioning were used scan implants embedded porcine jaw, covered by tissue, submerged water tank. Results indicated that can be accurately detect, locate, measure fixtures overlying an ex vivo environment.
Using a reflection-based pulsed THz imaging system built upon our ErAs:GaAs photoconductive switch and gated receiver, we quantify image quality at different detection bands (centered 100, 400, 600 GHz). Zero-bias Schottky diode detectors mounted in various waveguide sizes are used to tune the operational frequency of system, while rest remains unchanged. The is quantified by applying an optical character recognition (OCR) algorithm on images 8-by-10 mm copper letters fiberglass substrate....
Reflective terahertz (THz) imaging may potentially become a valuable tool in determining skin hydration due to its non-ionizing photon energy, high sensitivity water concentration and ability penetrate through clothing. The absorption coefficient of the THz range is responsible for contrast between substances with lesser or higher degrees saturation. Water content, as well collagen fiber arrangement, varies different layers skin. This study sought determine whether could be exploited...
