The aims were to collect data on consumption of different food supplements in a sample the adult Italian population and characterize users by demographic, physical health-related characteristics, lifestyle behaviour.Cross-sectional survey. The study was conducted 2008 ten towns Italy (two from each five macro-areas: Northwest, Northeast, Centre, South Islands).Adults (n 10 000) aged ≥18 years randomly selected asked fill self-administered questionnaire regarding their use above variables....
Obesity is a low-grade chronic inflammatory state representing an important risk factor for colorectal cancer (CRC). Adipocytes strongly contribute to inflammation by producing mediators. In this study we investigated the role of human visceral fat adipocytes in regulating functions innate immunity cells. Adipocyte-conditioned media (ACM) from obese (n = 14) and CRC (lean, n 14; obese, 13) subjects released higher levels pro-inflammatory/immunoregulatory factors as compared ACM healthy lean...
This study compares 2 methods for determining nitrogen and protein in various types of infant food: the Kjeldahl method, developed 1883, which is time consuming labor intensive, a newer, automatic based on Dumas method. In each category food considered, results obtained from both are shown to be comparable; however, modified method quicker, easier, does not pollute laboratory environment.
ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to correlate specific fatty acid profiles visceral white adipose tissue (WAT) with inflammatory signatures potentially associated colorectal cancer (CRC). MethodsHuman adipocytes were isolated from biopsies WAT 24 subjects subdivided in four groups: normal-weight (BMI 22.0-24.9 Kg/m2) and over-weight/obese 26.0-40.0 Kg/m2), affected or not by CRC. To define whether obesity and/or CRC affect the status WAT, activation pro-inflammatory STAT3 anti-inflammatory...
Numerous studies were carried out about aminoacidic composition of vegetable proteins, but information the free amino acid pool and role these substances is very incomplete. The aim this paper was to contribute scarce knowledge concerning acids in botanicals botanical preparations widely used as food, dietary supplements, pharmaceutical products. This work studied acids, identified major components 19 species plants, evaluated influence different types extraction on profile. Amino determined...
Studies relating maternal diet to milk composition in humans have led contradictory conclusions with regard protein intake. The purpose of this paper was examine if differences intake a group lactating women can impact the and non-protein nitrogen fraction their milk.Healthy women(117) were recruited Northern, Central, Southern Italy. Their anthropometric measurements obtained one month after delivery, while dietary evaluation based on two consecutive 24-hour recalls. Infants' growth...
Evidence has accumulated indicating that oxidative stress may play a key role in the etiology of diabetic complications and protective effects antioxidant nutrients are topic intense research. The purpose this study was both to obtain preliminary data on effect diet high fruit vegetables metabolic control status patients with type 2 onset diabetes, identify most useful biochemical parameters for future At beginning all subjects were asked follow their usual keep seven-day food diary....
ABSTRACT Dietary intake is the main source of silicon for humans. The essentiality man has not been clearly established, and no suitable data are available establishment a tolerable upper level. Recently, few cases silica stones in subjects ingesting trisilicate antacid have reported, as well 1 case renal calculi 10‐mo‐old boy, ascribed to silicate‐rich mineral water used dilute milk. purpose this study was collect extensive on content that could be combined with different foods overall diet...
Very few data have been published concerning the actual energy and nutrient intakes of lactating women; in particular there no reports Italian women. We report our findings on macronutrient a group exclusively breast-feeding Differences between Recommended Dietary Allowances are also discussed.Healthy women aged 27-36 years were recruited three major geographical areas Italy (North, Central, South)Dietary evaluation was based two consecutive 24-hour recalls from each mother (dietary data, n...
Phytosterols are one of the bioactive components responsible for beneficial effects Serenoa repens in Benign Prostate Hyperplasia. The aim this study was to verify actual variability phytosterols content supplements containing serenoa, order provide useful elements check effectiveness these preparations. amount campesterol, stigmasterol and β-sitosterol were determined by gas-chromatography commercial raw materials serenoa association or not with other botanicals. experimental data used...
The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability a self-administered postal questionnaire on use food supplements. carried out in subjects representative an Italian adult population. Eight thousand eight hundred twenty-three received questionnaire; 1723 completed it which 102 twice (baseline and 1-month re-administration). latter 204 questionnaires were used test using Cohen's kappa statistic (k) intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) for categorical quantitative variables,...
Several food producers use precautionary allergen labelling (PAL) to alert consumers the possible unintended presence of allergens in products. In vast majority countries, PAL is not regulated by legislation; its application voluntary and does represent a defined risk that can be communicated other stakeholders. Some surveys examined, at same time, product categories with without verify correspondence between label presence/absence contamination but no similar studies have been carried out...
